Sir Roger Wentworth #52ancestors

Roger Wentworth (d 1452), younger son of John Wentworth of North Elmsall, Yorkshire, acquired the manor of Nettlestead, Suffolk, in right of his wife Margery (1397–1478), daughter of Sir Philip Despenser and his wife Elizabeth, daughter of Robert de Tiptoft, last baron Tiptoft of the first creation and lord of the manor of Nettlestead. Roger Wentworth's younger son, Henry (d 1482), was by his first wife ancestor of the Wentworths of Gosfield, Essex, and by his second wife of the Wentworths of Lillingstone Lovell, Oxfordshire; to the latter branch belonged Paul Wentworth , Peter Wentworth (1530?–1596) , and Sir Peter Wentworth (1592–1675) . Roger's elder son, Sir Philip, was father of Sir Henry Wentworth (d 1499), whose daughter Margery (d 1550) married Sir John Seymour (d 1536) of Wolfhall, and was mother of Queen Jane Seymour, of Protector Somerset, and grandmother of Edward VI.

Bourne Heritage: 30. William Bourne and 31. Melia Vaughan #52ancestors

Number 30 on my ancestor list is William Emmett Bourne and number 31 is his wife Melia Vaughan Bourne. I cannot tell you who their parents are as they are two of my walls and have been for months, but I can tell you a little about them. William Emmett Bourne and Millie Vaughan are the parents of my great grandmother Vennie Lee Bourne who married William Akers. William and Millie are my 2nd great grandparents; that is generation 5 on the old pedigree and sadly they are the end of the lines of those branches. Maybe someday...

George de Leslie, 1st Baron of Balquhain #52ancestors

"The distinguished family of Balquhain is, as Sir Walter Scott styles it, an ancient and honourable family of an ancient and honourable name. It is descended from Sir George Leslie, fifth son of Sir Andrew de Leslie, sixth Dominus Ejusdem, or of that Ilk, by his wife Mary Abernathy.
"Sir George Leslie got the estate of Balquhain, in the Garioch in Aberdeenshire, from his father, and obtained a royal grant of it for services to Robert Bruce in his wars against Edward II., and in those against Edward Baliol during the minority of David II., from whom, in 1340, he received charters of the lands and baronies of Balquhain, Syde, and Braco, which his family have continued to possess for upwards of 500 years. Hence he and his successors received the style and title of Barons of Balquhain, and use supporters to their arms -- a privilege allowed only to the oldest barons, and acquired by this family very deservedly for its public services, antiquity, extensive possessions, and the number, rank, and quality of its descendents. The Barons of Balquhain were wont to be created upon earls and great barons, and many of them held office of Sheriff-principal, or chief magistrate, of their native country of Aberdeen, which office was intrusted solely to the highest nobility.

George de Leslie, 1st Baron of Balquhain  is my 16th great grandfather.

58. Zack Taylor and 59. Lizzie Peak of Wythe County, Va. #52ancestors

Thanks to Family Search, I finally broke through that thick Taylor wall of mine and found the parents and grandparents of Nora Taylor Akers. Nora married Leander Wade Akers in Wythe County, Virginia and the marriage record said her parents names were Z. Taylor and E. Peak. A little digging found a Zachonalt Taylor and Lizzie Peak who married in Wythe County a few years before Nora was born. Strong coincidence? A little more digging found records of Zechariah Taylor and Elizabeth J. Peak's family in Wythe, Va. I thought that Zachonalt was a strange name but after thinking about it a while I realized that Zachonalt and Zachariah look a whole lot alike in cursive and so...

Well, anyway Zack was the son of Pleasant Coleman Taylor AND Jane Reed Tharp, and Lizzie was the daughter of Aaron Peak and Sarah Christley, my new walls in the Nora Taylor bloodline. Jane was the daughter of Jonathan Tharp and Aaron was the son of Samuel Peak and his wife Mary.

Pleasant's 1850 census lists Eliza A. Taylor age 88 living with him and he had moved from NC to VA by then, so I suspect that Eliza A. Taylor was his mother. She was born in 1762 Virginia. Husband may have died before 1850 census.

If you are new to genealogy, walls is code for challenge....

Sir William "The Crusader" Sinclair, Lord of Roslin #52ancestors

SINCLAIR or SAINT CLAIR, Sir WILLIAM (d. 1330), of Roslin, friend of Robert Bruce, was the son of Sir Henry Sinclair of Roslin [see under Sinclair, Sir William, (fl. 1266–1303)] by Alicia de Fenton. According to Father Hay, he received from Robert the Bruce the grant of Pentland Moor in free forestry and the office of great master-hunter of Scotland on account of the prowess of his two dogs, ‘Help’ and ‘Hold,’ in capturing a fleet white deer which repeatedly baulked the efforts of Bruce's hounds (Genealogy of the Sinclairs, p. 16). He was one of the knights chosen to accompany Sir James Douglas (1286?–1330) [q. v.] to the Holy Land with the heart of Bruce; and, in view of the service which he was expected to render him, received from Bruce a pension of 40l. (Exchequer Rolls, i. 209). He was slain, along with Douglas, on the plains of Andalusia by the Saracens on 25 Aug. 1330 (Wyntoun, Chronicle). By his wife Isabel—sometimes surnamed Sperra—daughter of Malise, earl of Strathearn, he had three sons and a daughter: Sir Henry Sinclair, earl or prince of Orkney [q. v.], William, David, and Margaret, who married first, Thomas, second earl of Angus, and secondly, Sir William Sinclair of Herdmanston.

"Black William" Herbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke #52ancestors

Sir William Herbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke KG (c. 1423 – 27 July 1469), known as "Black William", was the son of William ap Thomas, founder of Raglan Castle, and Gwladys ferch Dafydd Gam, and grandson of Dafydd Gam, an adherent of King Henry V of England.

His father had been an ally of Richard of York, and Herbert supported the Yorkist cause in the Wars of the Roses. Herbert was rewarded by King Edward IV with the title Lord Herbert of Raglan in 1461 (having assumed an English-style surname in place of the Welsh patronymic), and invested as a Knight of the Garter.

Soon after the decisive Yorkist victory at the Battle of Towton in 1461, Herbert replaced Jasper Tudor as Earl of Pembroke which gave him control of Pembroke Castle. However, he fell out with Lord Warwick "the Kingmaker" in 1469, when Warwick turned against the King. William and his brother Richard were executed by the Lancastrians, now led by Warwick, after the Battle of Edgecote Moor, near Banbury.[1]

Herbert was succeeded by his son, William, but the earldom was surrendered in 1479. It was later revived for a grandson, another William Herbert, the son of Black William's illegitimate son, Sir Richard Herbert of Ewyas.
Marriage and children
He married Anne Devereux, daughter of Walter Devereux, Lord Chancellor of Ireland and Elizabeth Merbury. They had at least ten children:
  • 1. William Herbert, 2nd Earl of Pembroke (5 March 1451 - 16 July 1491).
  • 2. Sir Walter Herbert. (c. 1452 - d. 16 September 1507) Married Anne Stafford, sister to the Duke of Buckingham.
  • 3. Sir George Herbert of St. Julians.
  • 4. Philip Herbert of Lanyhangel.
  • 5. Cecilie Herbert.
  • 6. Maud Herbert, Countess of Northumberland. Married Henry Percy, 4th Earl of Northumberland.
  • 7. Katherine Herbert. Married George Grey, 2nd Earl of Kent.
  • 8. Anne Herbert. Married John Grey, 1st Baron Grey of Powis, 9th Lord of Powys (died 1497).
  • 9. Isabel Herbert. Married Sir Thomas Cokesey.
  • 10. Margaret Herbert. Married first Thomas Talbot, 2nd Viscount Lisle and secondly Sir Henry Bodringham.
William had three illegitimate sons but the identities of their mothers are unconfirmed:
  • Sir Richard Herbert of Ewyas. Father of William Herbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke (10th Creation). Probably son of Maud, daughter of Adam ap Howell Graunt (Gwynn).
  • Sir George Herbert. The son of Frond verch Hoesgyn. Married Sybil Croft.[2]
  • Sir William Herbert of Troye. Son of Frond verch Hoesgyn. Married, second, Blanche Whitney (nĂ©e Milborne) see Blanche Herbert, Lady Troy. They had two sons.[3]
