THE WITCH OF CHESTNUT RIDGE

The following is a newspaper article from 1895 about my third great grandmother Deborah SHINAULT.

THE YADKIN VALLEY NEWS, Thursday, March 28, 1895
The Witch of the Chestnut Ridge Dead
A correspondent gives the following account of the death of a noted character in this section. Deborah Johnson, nee Shinault, died at her home on Indian Graves Gap in Chestnut Ridge, a few days ago. she was 88 years old and had practied her craft since a young girl. She has relieved the palpitation of many young hearts in their first experience in courtship by assuring them that their suit would be finally successful. Many people came great distances to ascertain who was the thief when losing property or money, and many are the miraculous stories told of finding things by following her directions, such as bunch cotton burried in a swamp, money hid in hollow stumps, &c &c , One man, not many years ago, rode 18 miles and back to find out which way he should un his smut machine, whether with or against the sun. she advised him to run it with the sun. He returned home, followed her directions and succeeded in getting up a good flouring mill.

Thomas Bartlett, Mayflower Child?

DNA has proven that Thomas Bartlett who married Margaret Brent is my ancestor and by the way how exciting is it to have DNA confirm your paper trail? But now a rumor surfaces that Thomas is a descendant of the Mayflower? My first guess of course, is from Richard Warren whose daughter Mary married Robert Bartlett who came over on the Ann, or is it Anne? Now as Robert was born around 1603 and Thomas was born about 1645ish, the relationship should be easy to find right?

Well, have not found a birth for Thomas but his son William was born about 1690 and apprenticed out at the age of eight, so Thomas must have been born about 1670 or earlier and his wife Margaret? She is rumored to be born about 1645. Now she may have married a younger man but what are the odds right? Thomas Bartlett AKA Thomas Berkeley is rumored to be born about 1635 but his son William is proven by documentation to be born about 1690 when his mother is rumored to be about 45 and his father is rumored to be about 55. Highly possible, but unproven.

Now if Robert was born at 1603 and Thomas may have been born about 1635 this would mean that Thomas is most likely a son of Robert or he was born later and is a grandson. Right? It works in theory but the sources for Robert Bartlett's descendants dont mention a son or grandson named Thomas....

Furthermore, Robert was born in England and died in Plymouth while Thomas was in Stafford County,  Virginia in 1690 and in Westmoreland County in 1667 and in 1676 Thomas is mentioned in his father in laws will.

MDLP K16 Modern Admixture Proportions

MDLP K16 Modern Admixture Proportions

The K16 model of Admixture K16 focuses primarily on 16 worldwide basic, distich components of modern human ancestry, which have been discovered and detailed in Haak et al. (2014), Lazaridis et al. (2016). These components were empirically 'learned' in ADMIXTURE software from allele frequencies of learning merged dataset (116463 SNPs) of human populations, which, in their turn, had been converted into 'synthetic groups of individuals', with each of them representing one (of 16) ancestral populations. Then, the rest of dataset ('reference') was projected unto those ancestral populations with SNPWEIGHTS software: the results of component projection were averaged per each modern group of human population, and taken as 'population reference values' of component membership in 2xOracle and OracleX4.

These 16 component are briefly described below as follows:
Amerindian - a component, which is modal (i.e has a peak) in various native American groups of North and South America, as well as in ancient DNA of Native Americans (Clovis, Kennewick man, etc).
Ancestor - an archaic component, detected in modern African Pygmy populations (such as Mbuties and Biaka) and Khoisan hunter-gatherers.
Steppe - a component which was sourced from ancient genome of European Bronze Age pastoralists: it roughly approximates levels of ancient North Eurasian hunter-gatherers' heritage, which was subsequently shown to have an influence in later eastern hunter-gatherers and to have spread into Europe via an incursion of Steppe herders beginning ∼4,500 years ago.
Indian - a component of ancestry harboured by populations of Indian subcontinent
Arctic - a component displayed in genomes of Eskimo Inuits from Greenland and shared with Siberian Chukchis/Koryaks.
Australian - a component of aboriginal ancestry assigned to Australian aborigens.
Caucasian - a major component of ancestry of modern inhabitants of Caucasus, Iran and northern Indian : it was derived from genomes of mesolithic Caucasian Hunter-gatherers: a major ancestral component linked to CHG was carried west and east by migrating herders from the Eurasian Steppe.
EastAfrican - a very dilluted component being inherited specififically from ancient inhabitants of Ethiopia and African Horn
NorthEastEuropean - a fancy moniker for a dominant type of ancestry in North-Eastern Europe based on older type of ancestry (WHG, west European Hunter-Gatherer), today this type of ancestry peaks in the Baltic region and Scandinavia
NearEast - a component harboured and later carried by ancient populations of Near East, in our time it reaches the maximum among Bedoins and Saudi Arabians; the component seems to carry an excess of Eurasian Basal component relative to Neolithic component.
Neolithic - a component, modeled on genomes of first neolithic farmers of Anatolia (West Asia), these farmers from West Asia migrated to Europe during the Neolithic and carried this component with them.
NorthAfrican - a local component of ancestry found in North Africans: this local North African genetic component is very different from the one found in the populations in the south of the Sahara (Subsaharian component, see below).
Oceanic - a component of aboriginal ancestry assigned to aborigens of Melanesia and Papua-New-Guinea.
Siberian - a component, which is rougly ascribed to Central Siberian (found at highest frequency in Nganasan)
SouthEastAsian - a dominant component of South East Asians: being highest among the Dai, Cambodians, Lahu and Malay, this is the most common East Asian component among South Asians.
Subsaharian - a main component of ancestry seen in Yoruba, Mandenka and Luhya populations.

Settlers of the Virginia Blue Ridge Highlands

My first genetic community and only one at the moment...
Ancestry has grouped the people of the Blue Ridge Highlands into a community. And they tell you which of your ancestors lived there...

To be more specific they said...

"Complex religious and economic crises in the eighteenth century often forced poor laborers across Great Britain and Germany to choose between oppression or emigration. Many of them moved into untamed land in the Pennsylvanian, Virginian, and Carolinian back country. As they continued west, these farmers settled Central Appalachia where the steep, timbered mountains provided a unique challenge to survival. The discovery of coal transformed the region into a network of mining towns whose success often fluctuated between boom and bust."

This should be handy for research purposes... some how... to be continued...

GENETIC COMMUNITIES ON ANCESTRY #FAMilyHISToryFRIDAY

ANCESTRY has started something new... GENETIC COMMUNITIES...
WHAT IS A GENETIC COMMUNITY? BASICALLY ANCESTRY describes it as

"Genetic Communities™ are groups of AncestryDNA members who are connected through DNA most likely because they descend from a population of common ancestors, even if they no longer live in the area where those ancestors once lived."

in other words a genetic community is a group of members with common ancestors in a common area who have DNA in common. get it?

me neither... going to go look into this further... see ya....

UPDATE FOR ALL MY BOURNE COUSINS

Looks like we have a shared LEGACY....

So if you click on the BOURNE tag in the post you get all the Bourne posts in the blog. But you knew that. So you probably know that I finally broke through that wall and found James Emmett Bournes parents parents...

JAMES senior was born about 1800 and is called the late bloomer as he was about 77 when he married a much younger Matilda Stephenson and started a family. James was the son of Stephen Bourne and Rosamond Mallory and Stephen Jr was the son of Stephen Bourne and Hannah. Think she was a MINITREE but not sure.

Stephen jr was a Sgt in the Revolution, promoted by General Washington...

Stephen Sr was the son of William and his second wife, do not know her name... but Williams first wife was NANCY VAUGHAN.... who was not the mother of STEPHEN SR.... some confusion in the research on that...

WILLIAM JR. was the son of WILLIAM SR. and his first wife... name unknown... but was raised by William and his second wife MARY POLLY VAUGHAN who was not Juniors mother... They married in 1711 long after William and his brother Stephen's births...

Stay tuned...

WHY BETSY ALTIZER IS probably NOT THE MOTHER OF SARAH REED AKERS

When I first started the family tree I discovered numerous sources claiming that Sarah Reeds mother was Elizabeth Altizer, but recently found out that that must be wrong. The marriage of Betsy Altizer and George Reed Sr, was in 1829, however, Sarah Reed was born in 1817 and George was married to Sarah Graham at the time. In other words Sarah Reed Akers mother is actually Sarah Graham. Guess thats where the name came from... The point being, sometimes the trees and rumors are not true... George had his children before the death of his wife Sarah and his marriage to his last wife Betsy... He may have married others as well... it is a common name, but Betsy was definitely not the mother of Sarah Reed.... who by the way is my 4th great grandmother.
