Will of John Nichols, dated 5 April 1803

" In the Name of God Amen I John Nichols Sen. of Bedford County in the State of Virginia being low in health and weak in body but of perfect mind & memory, thanks to Almighty God, but knowing it is allotted for mortal man to die, I do make and ordain this to be my last Will and Testament, first recommending my poor Soul into the hands of the almighty God that gave it to me and my poor body to decently to interred and after my lawful Debts and funeral expenses is discharged, I will and bequeath my Worldly Estate that it hath pleased the Almight God to possess me with, in form and manner following, Viz Item, I bequeath unto my son Flayl Nichols my big family Bible. Item , I bequeath to my son John Nichols, my young horse called Ceilia, after my beloved wife, Martha, decease. Item; I bequeath unto my son Archibald Nichols, a tract or parcel of land beginning at a locus near the fence of premises now tending, thence a new marked line down to the mouth of ny lane, thence along the old line to Gills and my corner tree to a spanish Oak, thence along as the old line directs to a chestnut or Burnetts line, thence along Burnetts line to a newmade corner white Oak on Elisha Nichols line thence along Elisha's new line to the first station. Item; I bequeath unto my son Elisha Nichols a tract of land or parcel of land, beginning at a chestnut on Ayer's road thence along the road as the new mark line goes to a pealed corner white oak , thence off across the field and as the newmarked line goes to a corner white oak on Burnetts line including the twelve Acres I purchased of Elisha Burnett, thence along the line to the beginning station. Item ; I bequeath unto my son Jesse Nichols, the tract or parcel of land whereon I now dwell after my beloved wife Martha Nichols (decease) Beginning at Pointers next to John Hall's line, thence along as the line directs to a corner chestnut on Ayers road thence along the road a new lineto the corner pealed white oak in the field, thence along off across the field and along Elisha's new mark't line to the new mark't corner locus by the fence, thence along the new mark't line to the mouth of the lane, then along as the old line directs to Gill's and my corner Spanish Oak. Item ; I bequeath to my beloved wife Martha Nichols, the negroe Wench name Delphia and negroe boy named Frank, during her life or widowhood, after that to be equally divided between by my two sons Elisha and Jesse Nichols. Item; I bequeath unto my sons Elisha and Jesse Nichols the waggon, three horses, named Dick, Jack and Sawny, and all the utensils belonging to the waggon. Item ; I bequeath unto my son Elisha one red and white spotted no horn Heifer. Item ; I bequeath unto my son Jesse Nichols one dark brinded Heifer. Item; I bequeath unto my children Mary Cundiff, John Nichols, Katherine Pollard, my son Archibald Nichols, and my daughter Jane Hancock, all the other moveable property of my Estate after my beloved wife Martha Nichols deceases excepting what is before mentioned and a small shott gun, which I bequeath unto my grandson John Nichols, the son of my son John Nichols., Item; I do constitute and ordain my two beloved sons Elisha Nichols and Jesse Nichols my sole Executors to this my last Will & Testament revoking and disannulling any other former Will & Testament and constituting and allowing this to be the last Will & Testant according to my desire; Given under my hand and seal this 5th day of April 1803.

"Cade" AKA Cajabeth White #52ancestors

This post is about my ancestor John White's father Cadbreth AKA Cade who was also known as Cajabeth and many other variations of his name. The letter comes from a cousin who is researching the White line that John is in. I recently got this letter in my inbox and thought I would share it with you here....

The following was sent via the private messaging system on WikiTree.com.

Raymond, John White of Surry Co was my 4th great grandfather. I have been collaborating with several other descendants over the past few years in an effort to determine his lineage. We've made some progress. I feel very confident that his father was a man named Cajabeth White m. Frances LNU. He had an elder brother named Robert m. Ann Bush. Cajabeth lived for many years in Bute (later Warren) Co, NC. The earliest known record of him is a 1766 tax list, when he was living in the household of his brother, William. Cajabeth moved briefly to Mecklenburg Co, VA in 1795 before moving on to Rockingham Co, NC. He and his wife appear to have died in 1798, the year Cajabeth made out his will. John may have moved briefly to Mecklenburg Co as well, but by 1800 was living in Caswell Co. He and his family migrated to Surry Co around 1815, but can't be found in the census records until 1830. He was named in the will of John Seagroves as the latter's nephew. Seagroves was the bondsman for the marriage bond of Henrietta White. I have taken the Y-DNA test offered by Family Tree. It showed a close match to men with the surname West and no matches to men with the surname White. (My Y-DNA matches that of my uncle, so I'm pretty sure I'm in the right family.) A distant White cousin is taking the test now in an effort to see if his Y-DNA also matches the Wests. With his results I hope to be able to identify when in genealogical time this paternity cross-over may have happened. I would be happy to share my tree with you. We have collected quite a few documents about Cajabeth White. Please let me know if you are interested.

Edward Morgan possibly married Elizabeth Jarman, probably the daughter of John Jarman. Edward and his wife arrived in PA in 1683 and lived near Radnor PA until 1695 when they moved to Towamencin Township and built a house on 500 acres of land. He joined the Society of Friends and was known as Edward Morgan the Tailor.

"The Morgan house and family figure importantly in American History. Edward MORGAN, son of Sir James MORGAN of Llantarnam, Wales, brought his wife Elizabeth to America in 1683. In Philadelphia they became members of the Society of Friends at the Haverford-Radnor-Merion Meeting, later acquired the house-site and some 800 acres, and became the first settlers in the Upper Welsh tract beyond Gwynedd. Their daughter Sarah, born in the house, grew up to marry one Squire BOONE, and made them the grandparents of Daniel BOONE, that great frontiersman who led the settlement of Kentucky and then the West.

Early Settler Of the Welsh colony of Gwynedd, Berks County (now Montgomery County), PA. While some sources say his birth place is Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, that is not correct. Death: 1739 Place: Gwynedd, Pennsylvania.

"The first settler in Gwynedd or its vicinity named Morgan, was Edward. He seems to have been here as early as 1704, as the road upward through Gwynedd, made in that year, was to go as far as his place. He was a tailor by trade, a Welshman by birth, no doubt, and probably advanced in years when he came. He had lived previously near Philadelphia. In February, 1708, he bought 300 acres of land in what is now Towamencin, of Griffith Jones, merchant, Philadelphia. The tract lay along William John's land, and was therefore on the township line. In 1714 he bought 500 acres more, nearby, of George Claypool of Philadelphia, who, like Griffith Jones,was a speculative holder of Towamencin lands. By 1713 he had apparently moved to Montgomery; in the deed from Claypool he is described as a "yeoman of Montgomery."

Edward Morgan no doubt had several children. His sons probably received and held the Towamencin lands. In the list of 1734, for that township there appear: Joseph Morgan, 200 acres, Daniel Morgan, 200; John Morgan, 100. In 1727, Morgan Morgan of Towamencind died leaving a will in which he mentions jhis wife Dorothy, his brothers Joseph, John and William, his two sons Edward and Jesse (both minors), and his niece Elizabeth, John's daughter."

"Indian Jane" Hubbard, Cherokee #52ancestors

This #52ancestors challenge post is about my 5th great grandmother "Indian Jane"...

--Records for Charles Rakes Sr. pulled from Patrick Co. Va.--

There is a lot of confusion between "Indian Jane", Jane Hubbard, Nancy Hubbard, Nancy Jane Hubbard, and Nancy Jane "Indian Jane" Hubbard as being of the same person.

Charles Rakes 2nd wife: "Nancy Hubbard", which "no records" of any children. He married her at age 76, which not impossible, doubtful of any children.

Her parents were Joseph Hubbard and Ann Crews.
Ann Crews parents were Hardy Crews and Phoebe Doochie/Goochie.
Many publications for Hardy and phoebe, Hardy from Ireland was a land surveyor.
As a record account goes: he chose a beautiful dark-haired Cherokee maiden, named Phoebe Doochie/Goochie.
Phoebe is full blooded Cherokee Indian, of what is now the Smoky mountains area and Cherokee Indian reservation.(This was prior to the building of the fort(Prior to dawes roles)). Early to mid 1700's.

Reports indicate: Cherokee recognize Hardy/Phoebe of pure blood of having both land and rights. Joseph who married their daughter Ann Crews, she would be 1/2 blood Cherokee, which was entitled to NO land, but given all other Cherokee rights.

Joseph was well known by the Cherokee as "good friend", often stopped by on their way to trading.

Charles Rakes Sr 1st wife: Indian Jane has "NO" last name, but had 12 children 11 female 1 male. Records indicate born abt 1740.
Anna,Constant,Jane,Mary Bashie,Sarah,Rhoda,Dorcas,Elizabeth, 3 unknown females,and Samuel Jackson Rakes b.1790. All from Patrick Co. Va.

This is the direct line of Rakes that goes into Winfrey. Charles Rakes Sr daughter:Dorcos Rakes married: Richard R.Winfrey.

As per stories, and publications: Indian Jane's full blooded Cherokee parents were killed during a raid,(sometime after the fort was built and before the trail of tears.)

This left her an orphan baby, which was raised by Joseph Hubbard, he named Jane "Indian Jane" (No records, many different publications).
"This would be the early 1740's which records would be very hard to find if even recorded."

++This is probably where the confusion is about calling her Jane Hubbard....

The marriage to Charles Rakes Sr is also not recorded. All Rakes from Charles Rakes Sr. 1740 to 2012, are directly from "Indian Jane" Which for legal purposes on a marriage certificate would be Jane Hubbard, if the record even exists.

Indian Jane being of full blooded Cherokee Indian.
(Would like to find records of blood parents.)
