58/ 59 Zachariah Taylor and Elizabeth Peak
![]() |
| 1850 census of PLEASANT COLEMAN TAYLOR, CARROLL CO., VA. |
It's Family History Friday and number 58 on my ancestor list is my third great grandfather, Zachariah Taylor, the husband of Elizabeth Peak. The Taylors are the last names on my ancestor list in generation 6 as I have not yet found the names of the next four ancestors and so this will be the end of my generation 6 posts for now...
Zack Taylor was the son of Pleasant Coleman Taylor and Jane Reed Tharp.
Zack married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Peak on December 16, 1873 in Wythe Co., VA.
Zack's marriage record says he was born in Carroll county, Virginia as was his wife Elizabeth.
Lizzie's parents were Aaron Peak and Sally Christley. Zack's parents were Pleasant Taylor and Jane AKA "Jincy" Tharp. Pleasant and Jane were born in North Carolina, as were their children Thomas and Eliza A. Taylor. Their other children were born in Virginia, so the family must have moved to Virginia about 1944. Pleasant's mother was living with him in 1850 when Zack was age 3.

54/55 David Johnson and Deborah #FamilyHistoryFriday 1/12
Its Family History Friday again and today I will be continuing the Ancestor List Challenge I started in 2014. Also, this will be the 1st of 12 ancestors in 12 months for 2015.
Number 54 and 55 on my ancestor list is David Johnson and his wife Deborah...
David Johnson is the father of Margaret Elizabeth Johnson who married Robert Lee Linville. David's wife is believed to be named Deborah and some speculate her maiden name to be Shinall or Chenault. Who were his parents? Who were his wife's parents? Who knows? Sometimes you just hit a wall and crash. C'est la genealogy!
David and Deborah probably lived in Surry county, NC. They are my 6th generation great-great-great grandparents

58. Zack Taylor and 59. Lizzie Peak of Wythe County, Va. #52ancestors
Thanks to Family Search, I finally broke through that thick Taylor wall of mine and found the parents and grandparents of Nora Taylor Akers. Nora married Leander Wade Akers in Wythe County, Virginia and the marriage record said her parents names were Z. Taylor and E. Peak. A little digging found a Zachonalt Taylor and Lizzie Peak who married in Wythe County a few years before Nora was born. Strong coincidence? A little more digging found records of Zechariah Taylor and Elizabeth J. Peak's family in Wythe, Va. I thought that Zachonalt was a strange name but after thinking about it a while I realized that Zachonalt and Zachariah look a whole lot alike in cursive and so...
Well, anyway Zack was the son of Pleasant Coleman Taylor AND Jane Reed Tharp, and Lizzie was the daughter of Aaron Peak and Sarah Christley, my new walls in the Nora Taylor bloodline. Jane was the daughter of Jonathan Tharp and Aaron was the son of Samuel Peak and his wife Mary.
Pleasant's 1850 census lists Eliza A. Taylor age 88 living with him and he had moved from NC to VA by then, so I suspect that Eliza A. Taylor was his mother. She was born in 1762 Virginia. Husband may have died before 1850 census.
If you are new to genealogy, walls is code for challenge....

32 and 33. John Nichols and Martha Ann Jones #52ancestors
And its like week 32 of the 52 weeks of ancestors challenge and that brings me to ancestor number 32. the father of Ezekiel H. Nichols and the start of generation 6. my great great great grandparents. Ezekiel H. Nichols was the son of John Nichols and Martha Ann Jones according to Ancestry records, and he was the father of James Ira Nichols and George Haden Nichols. When Zeke died of acute influenza, George filled out the death certificate and listed Zeke's parents as Ezekiel and Martha Jones. this was the only time i ever saw him named Ezekiel so i figure it was maybe a preferred middle name that his children and family knew him as while his first name would have been the legal name that was on legal records.
Zeke's father, John Nichols was born about 1814 according to ancestry and family search in Bedford county, virginia. Ancestry trees named his parents as Isaac Nichols and Rhoda Bond. Isaac and Rhoda also lived in Bedford. John married Martha Ann Jones the daughter of Ezekiel S. Jones and Elizabeth Prindle. The Prindle family were a branch off of the Pringle family of Scotland of Ireland. still know documentation on the family of Ezekiel Jones.
John's son George married Melinda Young daughter of Moseley Young in Floyd, Virginia.
John passed away in 1861 in Floyd, Virginia....

34. James Henry Williams CSA POW #52ancestors #WednesdaysWall
Private James Henry "Bill" Williams was a farmer and a gambler who served Virginia in the Civil War. Legend says, he was captured by the union army and died a Prisoner of War. His wife, Clarissa Richards Williams also lost 5 brothers in the war and so she hid one of her sons to keep him from being hanged by Homeland Security, oops, I mean the "Home Guard."
Bill Williams father is unknown and so he is my Wednesdays Wall. His mother's name was Malinda Smith Williams. He was the father of my ancestor Isabelle Williams Nichols and he is my 3rd great grandfather....

35. Clarissa "Betty" Richards Williams #52ancestors
My third great grandmother, Clarissa A. Richards Williams AKA Betty. Ancestor 35.

http://records.ancestry.com/Clarissa_Betty_Richards_records.ashx?pid=126138363
Born in Franklin, Virginia, USA on May 1827 to Christopher Richards and Nancy Moore. Clarissa Betty married James Henry Williams and had at least 2 children. She passed away on 1910 in Virginia, USA.
Betty's husband was a professional gambler and was a CSA private in the Civil War and died as prisoner of war June 1, 1862. After Betty's husband and five of her brothers died during the Civil War, Clarissa hid one of her boys in a cave, to keep him from being drafted or caught and hanged by the "Home Guard."
Sometimes Isabelle would go with her to take him food. They would walk down a stream bed, so they couldn't be tracked. After the war, Clarissa went with her daughter and son-in-law, who was a minister, to Bluefield, West Virginia. She owned a large amount of land in Franklin County, bought with her husband's gambling winnings (but we have not yet located the land records).
In 1910 at age 85, she was living with her son Noah H. "Hank" Williams in Montgomery County, Virginia. *
