John's son Arch did not marry Polly... probably

JOHN NICHOLS' son ARCH did not marry POLLY UPDIKE.
How do i know?
First let me explain YDNA... Basically, it means that I have the same YDNA as my father and his father and his father and so on... And because of that i can say with a certain degree of confidence that i am descended from JOHN NICHOLS of Bedford County Virginia who married MARTHA J PAYNE because he and i have the same YDNA.
Now records show that my great grandfather JIMs father, EZEKIELs father, JOHN NICHOLS was     born in Bedford, Va. in 1814. And my sources say that JOHN and MARTHA PAYNE NICHOLS had a son named ARCHIBALD who had a son named JOHN about that time. But since his son JOHN was born in 1814, he would have been the son of Archibald's wife JUDITH HATCHER who was still alive and married to him at the time.

Now Judith did not die until April 4, 1819, which means that she was still very much married in January of that year when MARY POLLY UPDIKE married in Bedford County to another Archibald Nichols. Although marriage records reported her husbands name was Archibald, the Op-Dyck Genealogy called him John.

But since Arch was married to Judith in January he most likely did not marry Polly,... probably. Also, Polly's son, John M Nichols who married Sarah Adeline Richardson in Bedford County would not be the son of Judith. Judith's son John married Martha Ann Jones in Bedford County and was still there in 1860 for the census. My research shows that the family that moved to WV was not related to JOHN who married MARTHA J PAYNE.

The Archibald Nichols who died in West Virginia in 1860 was born in Maryland but who was his wife? We know that this was not Archibald G Nichols who fought in the war in 1864 and married Martha Jane Basham.

Arch the Quaker was married in November 1779 probably to Sarah Woolington..... since polly updike was born about 1781 she prob did not marry Archibald the Quaker. Also. the Arch born in 1769 MD who died in West Virginia was about ten then so probably not the Quaker.

A LITTLE BEDFORD COUNTY HISTORY

After the revolution my ancestors, LT. JOHN NICHOLS and FLAIL PAYNE moved to Bedford from Maryland and started the next chapter in their lives. JOHN married Flayl's daughter MARTHA J PAYNE and had a few kids. Among them, ARCHIBALD G NICHOLS who married JUDITH HATCHER and had my ancestor, JOHN M NICHOLS around 1814. John married MARTHA ANN JONES in Franklin Co. in 1846.
John and Martha Jones had at least five kids, IRA, GEORGE, EZEKIEL, OCTAVIA JANE, and JAMES NICHOLS. GEORGE NICHOLS married MELINDA J YOUNG and ZEKE married HARRIET ISABELLE WILLIAMS.
ARCHIBALD NICHOLS and JUDITH HATCHER were also the parents of SALLIE S KASEY who married GEORGE S. KASEY, DANIEL W. NICHOLS who married POLLY BLACK, KETURAH NICHOLS who married PRESLEY BINER, BYER NICHOLS, JUDITH NICHOLS, LUCINDA HATCHER NICHOLS who married MORGAN MORRIS, BARTLETT NICHOLS who married MARY POLLY RICHARDSON, and MARTHA J NICHOLS who married STEPHEN MORRIS,

MARTHA PAYNE NICHOLS had eight children....

ELISHA, FLAYL, JOHN P NICHOLS, JANE NICHOLS HANCOCK, MOLLY NICHOLS CUNDIFF, ARCH, JESSE, and CATHERINE NICHOLS POLLARD.

CATHERINE married JOHN POLLARD, FLAYL married NANCY ANN HATCHER, JOHN married SARAH PAYNE, JANE married EDWARD HANCOCK, MOLLY married BENJAMIN CUNDIFF, ARCH married MARY POLLY UPDIKE in 1819 after the death of JUDITH, JESSE married SARAH FIELDS, and ELISHA married NANCY PAYNE.

32 and 33. John Nichols and Martha Ann Jones #52ancestors

And its like week 32 of the 52 weeks of ancestors challenge and that brings me to ancestor number 32. the father of Ezekiel H. Nichols and the start of generation 6. my great great great grandparents. Ezekiel H. Nichols was the son of John Nichols and Martha Ann Jones according to Ancestry records, and he was the father of James Ira Nichols and George Haden Nichols. When Zeke died of acute influenza, George filled out the death certificate and listed Zeke's parents as Ezekiel and Martha Jones. this was the only time i ever saw him named Ezekiel so i figure it was maybe a preferred middle name that his children and family knew him as while his first name would have been the legal name that was on legal records.

Zeke's father, John Nichols was born about 1814 according to ancestry and family search in Bedford county, virginia. Ancestry trees named his parents as Isaac Nichols and Rhoda Bond. Isaac and Rhoda also lived in Bedford. John married Martha Ann Jones the daughter of Ezekiel S. Jones and Elizabeth Prindle. The Prindle family were a branch off of the Pringle family of Scotland of Ireland. still know documentation on the family of Ezekiel Jones.

John's son George married Melinda Young daughter of Moseley Young in Floyd, Virginia.

John passed away in 1861 in Floyd, Virginia....

16. Ezekiel H. Nichols AKA Zeke #52ancestors

This seems like a good time to write about my 2nd great grandfather Ezekiel H. Nichols as my cousin recently took a picture of his grave and his wife Isabelle's too. Zeke was born probably about 1844 in
Franklin, Virginia and died in 1920 at the age of 76 from Influenza. He is buried in Franklin County, Virginia. My cousin Kathie recently went to his grave to take photos and she created a Find A Grave profile for him too...

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=129141101

Although his tombstone says he died in April, his Death Certificate says he died in May. And while all other known records say his father was named John his Death Certificate says he is the son of Ezekiel.

Zeke was the father of James Ira Nichols and the grandfather of my grandfather Rufus. He married Isabelle Williams the daughter of James Williams and Clarissa Richards, His mother was Martha Jones, daughter of Ezekiel Jones and Elizabeth Prindle.

Here he is pictured with his wife Isabelle and 3 sons the one on the right is my great grandfather James....

Jones, Nichols, Prindles, Leonards, and Holdens: On the Trail of Bloodlines.

According to Genealogy.com and Ancestry.com , Ezekiel Jones married Elizabeth Prindle who was the daughter of William Prindle and Margaret Holden. Her sister Margaret married William Trail, and Margaret Holden was the daughter of Benjamin Holden and Abigail Leonard of Holden Beach, NC.  Ezekiel Jones was the grandfather of Ezekiel Nichols who was the son of John Nichols and Martha Ann Jones. William Prindle's first name may have been George and he may have been a descendant of the Pringle family of Scotland. Also, someone may have spelt Ezekiel's name as Ezekial....

It is also possible that Ezekiel S. Jones may be the grandson of Thomas Jones and Joanna Hill as they were all in Franklin County, Virginia at the time that Ezekiel was born.

Family History is full of What ifs and May Bes...

John Nichols was born in Bedford Va. and died in Floyd, Va.
Elizabeth Prindle was the d. of William Prindle and Margaret Holden. Her sister was named Margaret too. Naming children after their parents appears to be very common then.

ELIZABETH MAY BE THE DAUGHTER OF GEORGE W. PRINDLE AND MARGARET HOLDEN - I AM STILL RESEARCHING THIS.
Swinfield Hill, the son of Robert Hill and Violet Linus was born in Franklin County. Swinfield married Martha.
His sister Joanna aka Johanna married Thomas Jones of Franklin. Thomas was the son of Robert Jones of Wales and Mary Van Meter.

http://genforum.genealogy.com/jones/messages/33051.html
http://swinfieldhill.com/
Thomas parents were Robert Jones, Jr. who was born about 1696 in Wales and Mary (Maria) J. Van Meter who was born before April 26, 1709 in Somerset Co., New Jersey. (Something seems a little strange about this info. Why is Thamas referred to as Thomas, Jr. - later?)
Joanna Hill, who married Thomas Jones, was a daughter of Robert Hill and Violet "Velie" Linus. The children and heirs of Robert Hill are identified in several Franklin County, Virginia, deeds. Swinfield Hill and wife Martha; Thomas Hill and wife Alinah; Thomas Jones and wife Joannah; David Barton and wife Hannah; and Bartlett Wade and wife Mary, heirs of Robert Hill to Walter Bernard, 330 acres for 500 pounds on 04 April 1787. On 02 July 1787 Violet Hill, widow; Swinfield Hill and Martha; Thomas Hill and Aley; David Barton and Hannah; Thomas Jones, Jr. and Anna; Walter Bernard and Ruth; and Bartlett Wade and Mary sold 12 1/3 acres in Henry County near Washington Iron Works to James Callaway for 130 pounds. Thomas Jones, son of Robert, probably was known as Thomas, Jr. to differentiate himself from his uncle Thomas Jones, Sr.
The birth dates of the children of Thomas Jones and Joanna Hill appear on the front cover and flyleaf of the Minute Book of the Pigg River Baptist Church in Franklin County, Virginia. The book covers the first hundred years of the church. It was in an excellent state of preservation and in the possession of Mr. Woodrow Wilson Abshire, Clerk of the Pigg River Association, Route 711 (off Route 221), Bent Mountain, VA, in 1978. The birth date of Joanna Hill Jones also was recorded in the Minute Book. The birth date of Thomas Jones appears in the Family Bible of William Jones, who married Betsy Hill, as do the death dates of Thomas and Joanna, and of three of their children, Robert, William and John:
Thomas Jonesb 05 Jul 1748 d 22 Mar 1830
Joanna Jonesb 24 Jan 1752 d 02 Mar 1833
Robert Jonesb 28 Jul 1772 d 23 Sep 1837
Abraham Jonesb 13 Apr 1774
William Jonesb 05 May 1776 d 11 Nov 1848
Ruth Jonesb 10 Jul 1778
John Jones b 20 Sep 1780 d 11 Nov 1832
Hannah Jonesb 13 Jun 1783
Isaac Jonesb 17 Aug 1785
Polly Jonesb 30 Jun 1787'
Violet Jones b 22 Jan 1792
***Could one of Thomas' children be the ancestor of Ezekiel S. Jones? Could the S stand for Swinfield?
William Cook, Jr., husband of Margaret Jones, was appointed as one of the appraisers of the estate of Robert Hill on 16 March 1778. After the death of William Cook, Jr. in Kentucky, his sons, Seth Cook and William Cook III of Woodford County, Kentucky, granted their power of attorney to Thomas Jones, Jr. on 01 October 1793 to sell a tract of land in Franklin County, Virginia. This substantiates the probability that their mother Margaret Jones Cook was a sister of Thomas Jones, who was known as Thomas Jones, Jr.

Ezekial Jones #52ancestors #WednesdaysWall

Ezekial S. Jones 1798-1879
Born: Franklin, Virginia, United States
Died: Alexandria, Virginia, United States

My Wall this week is my 4th great grandfather Ezekiel Jones. Some have called him Ezekial or Ezekiel S. Jones. Ezekiel is the father of Martha Ann Jones who married John Nichols probably in Bedford, Virginia. Ezekiel married Elizabeth Prindle.

His parents may be Thomas H. Jones and Mary Newell. I found a hint on Mundia.com that suggests them, but I need further documentation.

The Reverend John Jones, Puritan Minister #52ancestors

John Jones, son of William Jones (1563 - 1633) & Elizabeth Morgan (b.1572) was born 22 November 1591 in Northamptonshire, England. A Cambridge graduate and Puritan minister who came to New England aboard the ship DEFENCE of London, Edward Bostock, Master. Defence sailed from London about the end of July 1635 and arrived at Boston 8 October 1635, with about one hundred passengers. Rev. Jones was 44 years old; accompanying him were his wife, Sarah, and children: Sarah 15, John 11, Ruth 7, Theophilus 3, Rebecca 2, & Elizabeth 1/2 [1].
Reverend Jones died 9 February 1665 in Fairfield, Fairfield, Connecticut Colony.

Notes

[1] "Planters of the Commonwealth" by Charles Edward Banks, p 171
JOHN JONES
"Concord, came in the Defence from London, arriving at Boston 3 October 1635"  [Savage II 562 citing autobiography of Rev. Thomas Shepard.]
"John Jones of Northampton, born c. 1592, matriculated in the University of Cambridge sizar from Queen's College, Michaelmas term 1608; B.A. 1612-13; M.A. 1616; ordained 1613. Probably rector of Abbots Ripton, Hunts, 1619-30, when he was deprived. Emigrated on the Defence with his wife and children and with Thomas Shepard, in 1635. Jones and Peter Bulkeley were leaders in the settlement of Concord, and colleague ministers of the church there. Jones, with a part of the flock, migrated in 1644 to Fairfield, Connecticut, and served as pastor until his death in Janaury 1664-65. Father of John Jones (A.B. Harvard 1643)." Samuel Eliot Morison, "Appendix B: English University Men Who Emigrated To New England Before 1646", The Founding of Harvard College (H.U.P., 1935), p. 385.
Rev. Bulkeley had been ousted from his pulpit in Odell, England (where he had succeeded his father, Rev. Edward Bulkeley, in 1609), in 1634 after several warnings from Bishop Laud and the Church of England that he was not following the dictates of King Charles I.  He, along with John Jones, knew full well that he would be removed from his pulpit sooner or later, so, being foresighted, he sent his oldest son Edward and a house builder named Thomas Dane to the colonies to build a house for Peter’s family.  Rev. Bulkeley was a wealthy man, and fortunately for him, he was allowed to bring his money with him when he followed his son to the new world a year later.  Rev. Jones might have had some wealth also, but he apparently was not permitted to bring it with him and arrived in the colonies with his family penniless, needing to seek immediate employment.
There are many theories about the relationship between these two men.  A tenth generation descendant of Peter Bulkeley, Thomas Taylor, has recently written his own essay, offering new thoughts to the discussion.  It must have been difficult for two strong-minded men to be leaders of such a small group of settlers.  In any case, after eight years of testing the soil and climate and trying to farm in Concord, several of these settlers became dissatisfied with the conditions, and seventeen families chose to leave in 1644.  They took Rev. John Jones with them as their leader and settled in what is now Fairfield, Connecticut.  Included in the group was Thomas Bulkeley, Peter’s son, who had married Sarah Jones, Rev. Jones’ daughter.  ....
"Then, by ourselves again, we found our way to Abbott’s Ripton, about thirty miles west of Odell, where John Jones had served in St. Andrew’s Church.  That was another marvelous day.  St. Andrew’s still stands, though built in 950 AD by the Saxons and rebuilt in 1246.  It was recorded in the Doom’s Day Survey of 1086 by William the Conqueror, and so is now very ancient and honorable.  In Abbott’s Ripton, we found Col. William Johns, warden and keeper of the keys, who drove us to St. Andrew’s and showed us through this ancient church.  There on the wall, in plain sight, is a long plaque of names of all the ministers who have served that parish.  There in the middle it says:"
Johannes Jones 1619 Departed 1630
Upon his departure, Rev. Jones presented his parishioners with a sterling silver Communion flagon, about eighteen inches high.  It is now kept in a vault and “only brought out to use when the Bishop comes to bless us,” but we saw a picture of it.  This may be an indication of Jones’ financial standing at that time, a man of comfortable wealth.
The location of these two towns, only about thirty miles from each other, and both men being Puritan Ministers and Dissenters, would indicate the possibility that they knew each other before coming to the colonies.

Will

In his will, dated 17 January 1664[/5] and proved 30 June 1665, "John Jones, pastor of the church at Fairfeild," ordered that "seven pounds be taken out of my estate ... & be delivered to the heirs or executors of Captain Cullicke, sometime one of the magistrates in Conecticot jurisdiction being due to him," and "whereas I promised my dear wife Susanna Jones fifty pounds in case I died before her and beside gave her a silver bowl within a little while after that I was married unto her this I do confirm by my last will that these are due unto her, moreover my will is that the said Sussana my wife shall have the use and benefit of my twelve acres of land in the Great Meadows and of my orchard m Fairfeild during her life and after her death that it be divided equally to or amongst my six children John, Ehphalct & my four daughters Sarah Wilso[n] widow, Ruth James. Rebeca Hull & Elizabeth Hill"; "my said wife shall have the remainder of my lot adjoining to the orchard as her own for her and her heirs"; to "my eldest son John Jones pan of my library, to wit the works of Augustin, Chrisostom and of other authors usually called the fathers"; residue "to be equally divided amongst my forcsaid six children, John, Eliphaiet. Sarah, Ruth, Rebeca & Elizabeth"; "my wife Susanna Jones [to be] the sole executrix"; "Mr. Gold & Mr. Pell both of Fairfcild (to be] the overseers" [Fairfield PR 2:5],
