THE WASHINGTONS, VOLUME 9, WASHINGTONS, WRIGHTS, GRANTS, KINGS, AND NICHOLS

Recently found a new source for my Wright and Washington lines and wanted to share it here.
THE WASHINGTONS, VOLUME 9 has a rundown of my ancestry from Colonel John Washington to my grandpa Rufus S. Nichols and his siblings.

Rufus is the son of James Ira Nichols and Teresa Marcella King of Franklin County, Virginia. Tressie is a direct descendant of George Washington's immigrant great grandfather John Washington who is a descendant of at least one Magna Charta Baron and is a founder of Jamestown and therefore a patriot of the American Revolution and a founder and patriot of the United States of America. Pretty sure he is listed in the SAR directory as well.

John Washington married Ann Pope and had a daughter Ann who married Major Francis Wright. Ann and Frank had a son named John Wright who is my seventh great grandfather.

John married Dorothy Aubrey according to sources and had my sixth great grandfather Captain John Wright, Junior, who married Elizabeth Bronaugh and had my fifth great grandfather Captain William Wright, Senior, who was a blacksmith.

William married Mary Grant who was the mother of my fourth great grandfather, James G Wright, Senior. James married Margaret Young who was also known as Peggy and was the father of Margaret "Peggy" Wright, named after her mother, obviously.

Peggy married Anthony King, Junior, and was the mother of Michael O King who married Louisa Catherine Aldridge.

Louisa was the daughter of Mary "Polly" Gibson and the mother of Teresa Marcella King, my great grandmother.

This line is listed in the book from William Wright to Rufus and is accepted as fact by the National Society of  the Washington Family Descendants.

JOHN D HANCOCK OF ALBEMARLE AND GOOCHLAND

John D. Hancock was born 1733 in James Northern Parish, Goochland Co, Va (or born 1730-35, New Kent Co, Va).
He is listed on the DAR Patriot Index as: "Hancock, John, b abt 1733 VA, d p 11- -1802, m Elizabeth Maddox, PS (patriotic service) VA"
He was a member of the Church of England.

1755 is the earliest record of John "D." Hancock in "The Douglas Register" where his marriage listed.
He married Elizabeth Maddox, dau. of John and Elizabeth Maddox, of Goochland (pink on map below) and Powhatan Counties, Va. Rev. William Douglas (of the "Douglas Register of Goochland") officiated at the marriage of John and Elizabeth, Oct 16, 1755 in Goochland Co, Va.

1756 -- John was granted 799 acres of land in Sussex County on Aug 16. 620 acres had been granted by a letter of patent in 1732. This land joined Col. Philip Lightfoot's land.

He moved to Albemarle (later Fluvanna) Co.
Goochland Co., Va Fee Book named "John of Albemarle Co."
Thomas Jefferson (b 1743) also lived in Albemarle Co, VA. and the Hancock land bordered the Jefferson land (SE of Charlottesville, VA). In fact, the Hancock land bordering Monticello was surveyed by Peter Jefferson, father of Thomas (Peter Jefferson died in 1757). [In 1764 Thomas Jefferson inherited his father's 2750-acre estate. In 1768 Jefferson began building Monticello. In 1770 Jefferson moved into Monticello. In 1772 he married Martha Wayles Skelton, whose dowry almost doubled his holdings.] Monticello is now located in Albemarle Co.

This 1790 map of Virginia shows: New Kent County (in green), Goochland County (in pink), Henry County (in orange; Patrick Co took the west part in 1791). In 1804 his daughter, Susannah married David Spurlock from neighboring Montgomery County (in blue).

All ten of John's children were born in Albemarle County, Va: Benjamin (1756), Lewis (1757), William L. (abt 1759), Major (abt 1760), Nancy (1763), Rhoda (abt 1766), Mary (abt 1768), Elizabeth Maddox (1773), Judith (1778), Susanna (abt 1780).

1774, Jun 5 - "In consideration of the sum of 10 shillings of good and lawful money, John Hancock was granted one certain parcel of land, containing 87 acres, lying in Co. of Albemarle, on the S. branches of Cunningham's Creek, beg. at Wm. Moore's corner to pointers in Colonel Hopkins' line, So. on George Hilton's line, East to Thomas Jefferson's line, then on to Wm. Moore's (Morris') line North to beg." [Vol 42, p. 709.]
Also June 5, 1774, "in consideration of the sum of Twenty Shillings . . . do give, grant and confirm unto John Hancock one certain tract or parcel of land containing 182 acres, lying and being in the county of Albemarle on the south side of the Rivanna River on the branches of Cunningham Creek, and bounded as follows, to-wit: Beginning at a pine and pointers in Hardin Burnley's line, running with the same S. 29(degrees) W. 180 poles, crossing two branches of Cunningham Creek to pointers, then now lines S. 40(degrees) E. 146 poles crossing two branches to pointers, and N. 37(degrees) E. 212 poles to the beginning."

John Hancock was a private in the Revolutionary War.
[There was another John Hancock who married Ann/Nancy Graves, and was a Capt in the Louisa Co, VA Militia.]

1777 -- John had four sons. He gave each of them a farm as they became of age. On August 7, 1777, John Hancock of Fluvanna Co., gave his oldest heir, Benjamin, 182 acres of land located on Cunningham Creek.
On Aug. 1, 1777, John D. Hancock of Fluvanna Co., for love and affection, deeded his son Benjamin Hancock 182 acres on Cunningham Creek, and his son Lewis Hancock 87 acres adjoining the lines of Thomas Jefferson, John Haden and Henry Haislip (D.B. 1, pp. 18 and 19). This deed is signed "John Hancock."

I don't know what his involvement was in the Revolutionary War, but there is a John Hancock from VA on the DAR list.

1785 -- Later (abt 1785 when he was abt 52) he moved to the west part of Henry Co. from which Patrick Co. was taken in 1791. (Check out this site for some history of Patrick County.) Maybe he didn't take his family with him at first. His daughter Elizabeth married in 1790 in Goochland County, and Mary married in 1795 in Fluvanna County, but Judith married in 1794 in Patrick County.

1799 -- Jan. 27, John Hancock and Elizabeth his wife, of Patrick Co., in consideration of $260.00, deeded land to Jacob Mayo, of Fluvanna Co. (D. B. 3, p. 505). Jacob was the father-in-law of 2 of his daughters: Elizabeth & Judith.

Sept. 13, 1802 (D. B. 4,p. 182), they deeded him 147 acres in consideration of $100.00.

John Hancock left a will dated Nov. 10, 1802, prob. in Patrick Co.,Va., Dec. Court, 1802
He left his son Lewis Hancock the land he lived on in Fluvanna County.
He left his sons William & Major the land he lived on in Patrick Co.
He left his clothes to son Benjamin because he had already given him 1821 in Fluvanna Co.
The rest of his estate he left to his wife for life or widowhood, and then to be divided among his 5 living daughters and William, with a part left for the children of his deceased daughter, Mary.

The Deposition of Archibald Nichols

Franklin County State of Virginia

The deposition of Archabald Nichols sayeth that he was well acquanted with Patrick Lynch Dec?d. whose widow claimes a pention for the servis rendered by her husband in the War of the Revolution ? and that his first acquaintance with said Lynch was in Washington County State of Merilon soon after the commencment of the Revolution and said Lynch was cald on to serve tower of duty under the command of Capt Henry Butler for three months servis and after returning from that tower he was cald on again to serve another tower of three months under the command of Capt. John Nichols and after his discharge from that tower he removed to the County of Bedford Virginia where I understood he served sevral towers was at the Battle of Gilford and at other places he was so fond of a soldeirs life that it is hard to asertain all his servises with correctness Just before the War was ended said Lynch married a Miss Martha Wherley at a time when groom ware ast in Church would ride to the parson the said Lynch was married in the town of new london Cambell County Va. [New London in Campbell County VA since 1782] by parson Holt and lived together many year as man & wife and said Lynch Died leving a wife and four children two boys and two girles and she has never married since

Pvt. Emera V. Altizer, American Revolutionary Soldier #52ancestors

UPDATE Emera Altizer is NOT my 6th great grandfather as was previously thought. 
Turns out his daughter was the second wife of my ancestor George Reed, Sr.....  

He was a German immigrant and was a Private in the American Revolution... 

Emera Ambrose von Althausen was the son of Johann Peter Althauser and Elisabetha Christiana Laucks. He was born in 1736 in Bingen on the Rhine, Hesse, Germany and died in September, 1819 in Montgomery Co, Virginia. His first name may have been Emmerich at birth.

He is believed to be buried in the Althizer Family Cemetery, near Chestnut Ridge, Montgomery County, Virginia. The stone in the cemetery is for a "Pvt Emera V. Altizer," who died in 1819. The stone is more recent than 1819, which could result in an error in the name (the "V" could have been for von), but this is Emera's correct death and military service.

He married (1) Anna Maria Pitzer in 1765 in Allengheny Co, Virginia and had four children. It is believed that he married (2) Mary Miller of Maryland and had four more children. It should be noted that in a DAR application, this marriage has been called into question. There is extensive documentation of a Revolutionary War pension for a Mary Altizer, but her birth name or parentage is not found in the application. In the application, her husband is listed as "Emory" Altizer. The pension account was W. 4,720.

Emera served in the Virginia Infantry for eighteen months during the American Revolution, under Capt. Wallace. His DAR number is A002076. He was discharged from service after the surrender of Cornwallis. One family legend claims that he was brought to America to serve in a war but was too young and was adopted by a German immigrant family, later marrying their daughter Anna Maria. The dates don't quite fit this tale, charming as it is.

As with many European names in early American history, variations of spelling abound. His birth name was most likely Althausen or von Althausen. You will also find Althausen, Althauzer, Altizera (DAR records) , Althizer and Altizer, the last being the most commonly found variation in modern times. Another family tale has the name Altizer being a creation made from ALT of his name and IZER from his wife's name. More likely, it was an Americanized spelling based on the sound of the original German name.

Private John King, Revolutionary Soldier #52ancestors

John King, the Revolutionary soldier, volunteered for service to his country, in the cause of freedom, at White Plains, Maryland, for the term of three years 1778-1781. He served as a private under the command of Captain Stull of the Regiment commanded by Colonel Gunby, in the Maryland line from April 1778-April 1781. He fought in the Battles of Ruddy Fork, Alamance and Guilfod in the state of North Carolina. Was discharged from duty in Canaden, South Carolina, April 1781, When he arrived in Virginia is uncertain.

The above military record is contrary to a record that has previously been published. However, the above record is the one recieved from the Military Archives, Washington, DC., The above record was approved by the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution who have access to Military Archives records.

In 1818 the Revolutionary Claims Act was enacted by U.S. Congress providing a pension to Revolutionary soldiers. John King did not agree to apply for pension at this time. He felt he would be asking for and recieving charity of which he was opposed. He fought for freedom and independence not for monetary gain.

By 1829 John King was experiencing some mifortune and realized he would come to the point of declining health. He appeared before the court in Montgomery County, Virginia, in September, 1829, with his sworn statement of service, record of property ownership and letters of recommendation from his neighbors, Andrew Lewis, Jonathon Conner, and son-in-law, Stephen Burnett. Andrew Lewis stated he knew personally that Jong King had fought bravely in the battles he mentioned. He was in his neighbor, a man of good character, truthful and honest. However he had experienced financial difficulty.

In June, 1832, John King signed the following statement:

Known all men by these present, that I, John King, of the County of Floyd, Revolutionary Pensioner of the United States, do hereby constitutes and appoint Robert Craig, my true and lawful attorney for me and in my name, to receive from the Agent of the United States for paying pensions in Washington City, DC, my pensions from fourth day of March, 1831., to the fourth of March 1832.

Witness my Hand and Seal, this the 18'th day of June, 1832.

George Washington, General, Commander in Chief, and 1st President of the USA

George Washington's Birthday is recognized this month on the 17th and so I thought maybe I would do a blog about him. Nothing fancy, just a quick note to remember the first POTUS.

George Washington (February 22, 1732 – December 14, 1799) served as the first President of the United States of America (1789–1797), and led the Continental Army to victory over the Kingdom of Great Britain in the American Revolutionary War (1775–1783).

The Continental Congress appointed Washington commander-in-chief of the American revolutionary forces in 1775. The following year, he forced the British out of Boston, lost New York City, and crossed the Delaware River in New Jersey, defeating the surprised enemy units later that year. As a result of his strategy, Revolutionary forces captured the two main British combat armies at Saratoga and Yorktown. Negotiating with Congress, the colonial states, and French allies, he held together a tenuous army and a fragile nation amid the threats of disintegration and failure. Following the end of the war in 1783, Washington retired to his plantation at Mount Vernon, prompting an incredulous King George III to state, "If he does that, he will be the greatest man in the world."  

George's grandfather is the brother of Anne Minor Wright, my 8th great grandmother, and George's great aunt....

Blackburn Akers, Sr., Revolutionary Soldier #52ancestors

Blackburn Akers, Sr. is my 6th Great Grandfather. 

Blackburn Akers, Sr. was born about 1735 in Virginia and died about 1799 in Buckingham County, Virginia. He was the son of William Akers and Susannah Blackburn. He married Elizabeth Blackburn. She was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Blackburn.

He was sworn to the American cause on 13 Sep 1777 in Montgomery Co VA, and served in the militia in 1781 in Montgomery Co VA. He was placed on the unfit-for-duty list of the militia company of Captain Daniel Trigg, indicating he was 50 or more years of age.

Blackburn's life can be traced through many documents. He was a witness to the will of John Mossum on 7 Oct 1754 in Cumberland Co VA [Will book 1, page 97, 7 Oct 1754.]. He was on the tithe list in 1764 in Buckingham Co VA. He was shown with one tithe, 245 acres of land and no wheel carriages. He was tithed in 1771 in Botetourt Co VA. His land on the head of Little River later became part of Fincastle and then Montgomery Co VA.

He was shown on the personal property tax list in 1782 in Montgomery Co VA. He had one tithe and eight cattle He was shown on the land tax list in 1782 in Montgomery Co VA. He was assessed with a tax of one shilling sixpence for twenty acres, value seven pounds, ten shillings

He was entered in court documents on 17 Oct 1787 in Montgomery Co VA. "In the matter of Walter Crockett vs. Blackburn Akers et al. Blackburn Akers and John Bishop held & bound unto Walter Crockett, Sheriff, thesum of 12 lb 11 shillings. (This stems from a suit of John Plank vs.estate of Blackburn Akers for the sum of 6 lb 5 shilling 6 pence. Notewas signed by Blackburn Akers and John Bishop. Jno. Bishop signed in German. Witnessed by Marthy Akers and Nancy Akers." He was entered in court documents on 4 Sep 1794 in Montgomery Co VA. "In the matter of William Hall vs Blackburn Akers.By acct. Blackburn Akers owes Hall 2 lb 12 shillings." He was entered in court documents in 1795 inMontgomery Co VA. "In the matter of Ingles & Russell vs Blackburn Akers for 5 lb damages & 7 lb 14 sh; to appear in ct. Dec 3, 1795." He was entered in court documents on 6 Nov 1795 in Montgomery Co VA."In the matter of John Van Lier (Lear) vs Blackburn Akers; 8 lb 16 sh & damage 5 lb owed on April 2, 1793." He was entered in court documents on 6 Apr 1796 in Montgomery Co VA. "In the matter of Geo.Taylor & Co. vs Blackburn Akers; note for 4 lb 6 shilling 1 penny for value rec'd. To appear in court Dec. 7, 1796." He was entered incourt documents on 12 Sep 1796 in Montgomery Co VA. "In the matter of John Van Lear vs Blackburn Akers et al; Owed 8 lb 16 sh & costs (et al was Samuel Merriday, who was on Blackburn's bond)." He was entered in court documents on 5 Oct 1797 in Montgomery Co VA. "In the matter of Ingles & Russell vs Blackburn Akers. Blackburn Akers owes 7 lbs 14shillings 5 pence & 5 lb damage. Note signed by Akers 29 Mar 1794 promised to pay 6 lb 17 shilling 4 pence on demand. This went on from 24 Mar 1794 to 1799. Many papers never served "for lack of time" and"for want of men". Note on back of one paper says "keep of by the force of arms". (kept off)."

Blackburn died about 1799 in Montgomery Co VA.Since he was summoned to appear at the 3 Oct 1799 term of theMontgomery Co VA court, he must have been living that summer. He doesnot appear on the personal property tax lists after 1798. He wasentered in court documents on 3 Oct 1799 in Montgomery Co VA."Summoned in the matter of Messenger Lewis vs Blackburn Acors for anote dated 11 May 1793 for 3 lb." He was entered in court documents1780, 1793 and 1795 in Montgomery Co VA. "In the matter of Herd'sExecs. vs Blackburn Akers; debtor to Mordecai Herd $3.00 for salt."

• Claybourne Akers was born ABT 1765. He married Elizabeth Thompson 17 APR 1789 in Montgomery Co., VA, USA. She was born ABT 1768.
• Martha Akers was born ABT 1766 in Montgomery Co., VA, USA. She married Elswick Thompson 27 NOV 1788 in Montgomery Co., VA, USA. He was born ABT 1763.
• William J Akers was born ABT 1767.

• Adam Akers was born ABT 1774 in Montgomery Co., KY, USA, and died BEF 1850. He married Nancy Altizer in Montgomery Co., KY, USA, daughter of Emera V Altizer Sr and Mary Miller. She was born 1790 in Floyd Co., KY, USA, and died in Montgomery Co., KY, USA.

Sgt. Wright Bond: Minute Man and Revolutionary Soldier #52ancestors

UPDATE although i was previously led to believe that my NICHOLS bloodline was descended from Wright Bond, DNA proved that was wrong. Wright Bond is not an ancestor but one of his descendants did marry a descendant of my HATCHER bloodline and so he is still in the family tree...

Sgt. Wright Bond was a Minute Man and Revolutionary Soldier. He was the son of Page Bond and Ann Holland. He married Martha Brown, daughter of James Brown and Mary Spearman.
He was a descendant of Major John Bond of Virginia, who married Dorothy Harris.

 Wright² Bond (Page¹)⁽⁵⁷⁾ was born in Cumberland Co., VA. April 13, 1759. Wright died February 10, 1843 in Bedford Co., VA., at 83 years of age.
He married Martha "Patsy" Brown in Cumberland, Va, November 17, 1781.(58) Patsy was born about 1760. She was the daughter of James Brown and Mary Spearman. Patsy died after March 1848. Information taken from Bible records and with Pension Application. Patsy was 83 in 1843, and a widow. Dennis Johnson provided this info.
Wright was listed as the head of a family on the 1800 Census in Bedford Co.,VA..⁽⁵⁹⁾ According to Dennis Johnson: "It would appear that WRIGHT BOND was born 13 Apr 1759 in CUMBERLAND Co., VA. He married MARTHA "Pats/Patty" BROWN in Cumberland Co., VA. in Nov. 1781. (It states they married in Cumberland Co., VA. in the Pension file...ymw)
It is not clear where he was after November 1781 but we do know that he moved to Bedford, Va. in 1799-1800. Thus it would appear that all the children were born in CUMBERLAND CO., VA. up until Rhoda who could have been born in either location.

WRIGHT WAS A REVOLUTIONARY SOLDIER. HE ENLISTED IN CUMBERLAND COUNTY, VA. WHERE HE WAS BORN AND RAISED. HIS AMERICAN REVOLUTION PENSION # W3382.

YOU ARE ADVISED THAT IT APPEARS FROM THE PAPERS IN THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR PENSION CLAIM, W. 3382, THAT WRIGHT BOND WAS BORN APRIL 13, 1759 IN CUMBERLAND COUNTY, VIRGINIA.
WHILE A RESIDENT OF CUMBERLAND COUNTY, VIRGINIA, HE WAS ENGAGED IN 1775 TO SERVE FOR ONE YEAR AS A MINUTE MAN, AND DURING THAT PERIOD HE ENLISTED AND SERVED THREE TOURS IN CAPTAIN JOSPEH CARRINTON'S (Joseph Carrington - ymw)VIRGINIA COMPANY. A TOUR OF ABOUT ONE MONTH AS A PRIVATE, (a tour) ONE OF THREE AND A HALF MONTHS AS A PRIVATE AND WAS AT NORFOLK AT THE TIME LORD DUNMORE BURNED THAT TOWN, AND A TOUR OF FOUR MONTHS AS CORPORAL. HE ENLISTED IN SEPTEMBER, 1777 AND SERVED SIX WEEKS AS SERGEANT IN CAPTAIN BENJAMIN WILSON'S VIRGINIA COMPANY AND HE STATED THAT THIS SERVICE WAS AS SUBSTITUTE FOR HIS FATHER-IN-LAW, MOSES HUBBARD.

THE SOLDIER MARRIED IN NOVEMBER, 1781 IN CUMBERLAND COUNTY, VIRGINIA MARTHA OR PATSEY BROWN.

 3 i. Tirzah³ Bond was born in Cumberland Co.,VA. about 1778. Estimated from marriage date. She married Francis G. Hardwood in Bedford Co.,VA., June 9, 1798.(60) Francis was born about 1778. Estimate based on marriage date. Wright Bond was surety, meaning he posted the $500 bond, so we assume Tirzah was close kin.

 8 vi. Anne "Anney" Bond was born in Cumberland Co., VA on October 7, 1791. She married John B. Turner in Bedford Co., VA. on October 9, 1811. Wright Bond, Surety.
 9 vii. Pleasant A. Bond was born in Cumberland Co.,VA. on July 2, 1794. He married Elizabeth Jeter in Bedford Co., VA., April 4, 1826. (From Bedford Co., VA.
