THOMAS HANCOCKE II was the father of WILLIAM HANCOCK of JAMESTOWN, who was killed in Jamestown by Indians in 1622.  William was the immigrant ancestor of my line. Three of his sons came to America later to claim his property. William was born about 1575....

William Garet of Drexel Hill #52ancestors

William (the Quaker) Garrett, was the son of Lord John Garet and Lady Mary Bible.

 Born in Hosse, Leicestershire, England; he married Ann Kirk, and moved to Harby, Leicestershire, England; then immigrated to America in 1684 after purchasing 203 acres of land. His son Samuel purchased an additional 60 acres. Combined, the two purchases would today cover most of the area between State and Garrett Roads, from Naylor's Run to Burmont Road. 

Samuel, who inherited his father's homestead in 1724, changed the spelling of the family name to Garrett and continued to purchase more land within the township. At one time, the family owned 1,110 acres of land in Upper Darby, nearly all the area now called Drexel Hill. 

The Garret Family farm and homestead, "Thornfield," became a way station on the underground railroad, years later as Samuel's grandson Thomas and great grandson Thomas worked for the Underground Railroad, and it is alleged that many fugitive slaves were quartered and fed on the farm. "Thornfield" consisted of a house (completed about 1800), 50 acres of dairy farm, and a tannery. The Garrett Family's "Thornfield" home still stands today at 3218 Garrett Road in Drexel Hill. William Garat died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Hugh le Despenser, 1st Earl of Winchester

Hugh le Despenser (1 March 1261 – 27 October 1326), sometimes referred to as "the Elder Despenser", was for a time the chief adviser to King Edward II of England.[1]

He was the son of Hugh le Despencer, 1st Baron le Despencer (or Despenser), and Aliva Basset, sole daughter and heiress of Philip Basset. His father was killed at the Battle of Evesham when Hugh was just a boy, but Hugh's patrimony was saved through the influence of his maternal grandfather (who had been loyal to the king).[2]

He married Isabella de Beauchamp, daughter of William de Beauchamp, 9th Earl of Warwick and Maud FitzJohn. He served Edward I on numerous occasions in battle and in diplomacy and was created a baron by writ of summons to Parliament in 1295. However, when he became close to Edward II his place was always with the king, which worried the barons. To that time, his highest office was justice of the forests.[3]

He was one of the few barons to remain loyal to Edward during the controversy regarding Piers Gaveston. Despenser became Edward's loyal servant and chief administrator after Gaveston was executed in 1312, but the jealousy of other barons - and, more importantly, his own corruption and unjust behaviour - led to his being exiled along with his son Hugh Despenser the younger in 1321, when Edmund of Woodstock, Earl of Kent replaced him as Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports.

Edward found it difficult to manage without them, and recalled them to England a year later, an action which enraged the queen, Isabella, the more so when Despenser was created Earl of Winchester.

Death

When Isabella and her lover, Roger Mortimer, led a rebellion against her husband Edward, they captured both Despensers—first the elder, later the younger. Queen Isabella interceded for Hugh the elder, but his enemies, notably Roger Mortimer and Henry, Earl of Lancaster, insisted both father and son should face trial and execution.

The elder Despenser was hanged immediately in his armor at Bristol on 27 October 1326. He was then beheaded and his body cut into pieces for the dogs. His head was sent for display to Winchester, which had supported the king.[4]

Sir Walter Devereux (1411 – 22 April 1459) of Bodenham and Weobley was a loyal supporter of the Richard of York, 3rd Duke of York during the Wars of the Roses. He was Lord Chancellor of Ireland from 1449 to about 1451.       

Walter Devereux was born in 1411 in Bodenham, Herefordshire to a senior Walter Devereux (or Deverois, 1387–1420) and his wife Elizabeth Bromwich.^[1] His maternal grandparents were Thomas Bromwich, Lord Justice of Ireland and Catherine Oldcastle.

His paternal grandparents were an elder Walter Devereux (c. 1361–1402) and Agnes Crophull.^[a] Agnes was mother of Sir Thomas Parr by a second marriage to John Parr of Kendal; and paternal grandmother of William Parr, 1st Baron Parr of Kendal, a noted courtier under Edward IV of England and grandfather of Queen Catherine Parr. Agnes Crophull's third husband was John Merbury, the father of Walter Devereux's wife by a previous marriage as indicated below.

His arms were: Argent a fesse gules, in chief three torteaux.   

He married Elizabeth Merbury. She was a daughter of Sir John Merbury,^[2] Chief Justice of South Wales and his wife Alice Pembridge. They had the following children:

• Anne Devereux (c. 1430 - after 1486). Married William Herbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke (1468 creation).^[1]
• Walter Devereux, 7th Baron Ferrers of Chartley (c. 1431 - 22 August 1485).^[1]
• Isabella Devereux (born c. 1435). Married Rowland Lenthall (o.s.p., 1422 to 12 May 1488).^[3]
• Sir John Devereux (born c. 1438).^[1][b]                                   

His first residence was Bodenham and the core of his Devereux family estates. With the death of his grandmother, Agnes Crophull, in 1436, he inherited the remainder of his Devereux lands including Lyonshall Castle.^[4] She withheld her Crophull lands, though, and deeded a life interest in them to her third husband, John Merbury.^[2] With his death in 1438, Walter Devereux inherited the Crophull lands^[5] including Weobley,^[c] and the Merbury estates.

Walter Devereux was a knight by 1429 when he first represented Hereford in Parliament.^[6] He would represent Hereford again in 1434, 1436,^[7] 1440,^[8] 1450, and 1459. Devereux was appointed to collect the tenth and fifteenth in 1336 and 1440 granted to the king by Parliament,^[9][10] and was entrusted again in 1441 with collection of a tenth and fifteenth to fund an expedition by the Duke of York to defend English possessions in France.^[11] In 1446, he was also entrusted with collecting a loan to the king.^[12] He was justice of peace for Hereford in 1441,.^[13] He served as sheriff of Herefordshire in 1447,^[6] and Gloucester in 1455.^[14]

Walter Devereux^[15] served with the Richard of York, 3rd Duke of York in France, and remained his supporter throughout the War of the Roses. In 1441 Devereux was granted protection and appointed an attorney while on service with York in France,^[16] and within a year had been knighted. In 1442 and 1445 he was in garrison at Arques (Normandy), and was listed as a captain.^[17] On 19 December 1445 he was leading a garrison detachment at the Siege of Conches.^[18] After York made a declaration at Ludlow in February 1452 declaring his loyalty to the King, but wishing to free the Court from bad advisors. The King did not respond, and York took to the field calling in his supporters including Walter Devereux, and marched on London. The King marched out to meet them, and eventually found York entrenched at Dartford Heath. The confrontation was resolved peacefully, but skirmishing followed leading to Devereux being attainted for treason by Parliament in 1452. At this time Devereux began holding Wigmore Castle for the Yorkists.

On 22 May 1455 the first Battle of St. Albans was fought north of London traditionally marking the opening of the War of the Roses. A Yorkist victory that included the capture of the King, it restored the Duke of York to complete power. Shortly after the victory Parliament pardoned Walter Devereux.^[15] As the King and the Lancaster party maneuvered to reverse their losses, outbursts of lawlessness grew on the Welsh Marches. Walter Devereux, Constable of Wigmore Castle, was up in arms. In the summer of 1456, he descended on Hereford with the castle’s garrison and captured the mayor and justices. Devereux then brought before the justices several local men whom the justices were obliged to condemn to death, and then he had them hanged. Devereux followed this by mustering a force of 2000 archers from Gwent, and marched on the castles at Carmarthen and Aberystwyth, which he took by assault. Afterwards he declared a commission of ‘oyer and terminer’ to judge and condemn more people whom he believed hostile to York. Among his prisoners were Edmund Tudor, the king’s half-brother, and Robert Rees, Keeper of the Welsh Seal.

Devereux was granted land in Drogheda in Ireland in 1459.^[1]       

He was appointed Lord Chancellor of Ireland in 1449. His term was brief and likely uneventful. In 1451, Richard Plantagenet, 3rd Duke of York, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland appointed his son, the 8-year-old Edmund, Earl of Rutland, as the new Lord Chancellor. Since Rutland was under age, his duties were taken over by Deputy Chancellor Edmund Oldhall.    

Walter Devereux died on the 22nd or 23 April in 1459.^[1]

Sir Thomas de Ashton, the Alchemist #52ancestors

Sir Thomas de Ashton or Assheton (fl. 1446), was an English alchemist.

Ashton was born in 1403, the son and heir of Sir John de Ashton, of Ashton-under-Lyne, who died in 1428. His half-brother Ralph de Ashton seems to have inherited the main family home, Ashton Hall. From roughly this date, differences appear in the coat of arms, motto and spelling of the two families, indicating that Sir Thomas may have distanced himself from his unpopular half-brother.

Permission was granted by Henry VI to Sir Thomas to transmute the precious metals, and on 7 April 1446 a special order was issued,[1] encouraging two Lancashire knights, Ashton and Sir Edmund de Trafford, to pursue their experiments in alchemy, and forbidding any subject of the king to molest them.

Sir Thomas married Elizabeth, daughter of Sir John Byron, by whom he had eleven children. The eldest son, John, was knighted before the battle of Northampton, 10 July 1460, was MP for Lancashire in 1472 and died in 1508.

Sir Thomas Gerard, of Kingsley and Bryn #52ancestors

Sir Knight Thomas Gerard of Kingsley & Bryn was born on July 15, 1431 and was only 16 years old when his father died. He became a ward of Thomas Danyell in 1449. He had two wives and for some unknown reason, was given a pension by King Edward IV. He was only 16 when he married Douce de Ashton in 1447. Later, he married, Cecily Foulshurst. Between the two wives, he had two sons, Lawrence Gerard and Sir Peter Gerard. Lawrence Gerrard did not inherit and moved to Sittingbourne, Kent County near London. He apparently, was the first ancestor in 10 generations, to leave the Bryn and Kinsley area -----------

Thomas Gerrard was born in Bryn, Lancashire, England to Sir Peter Gerard and Isobella Strangeways. He married Dulcia Assheton, daughter of Sir Thomas Assheton.

Since Vernon was only ten when his father died, in July 1400, he had to wait another 11 years for livery of his inheritance. This comprised the forestership of Macclesfield forest, together with the manors of Marpie and Wibersley in Cheshire; and estates centred upon Draycott, Harlaston and Pipe Ridware in Staffordshire, and Bakewell, Baslow, Calver, Haddon, Netherseal and Rowsley in Derbyshire. The custody of the Cheshire properties was granted piecemeal to (Sir) Roger Leche*, a senior official of the duchy of Lancaster, who was clearly anxious to extend his interests in the palatinate having already acquired the marriage and wardship of Sir Richard Vernon of Shipbrook’s young son and heir, Richard, after his father’s death fighting on the rebel side at the battle of Shrewsbury.7. The MP’s family (who are not to be confused with the Shipbrook branch) also owned the manors of Stackpole Elidor, Bosherton and Rudbaxton in Pembrokeshire, Pendine and ‘Cantrewyn’ in Carmarthenshire, Pitchcott and Adstock (with the advowsons of both churches) in Buckinghamshire and Meaburn Maulds and Newby in Westmorland, along with scattered holdings in Cumberland, but these, like the rest of the family estates, had been divided up to provide Richard’s mother and paternal grandmother, Juliana Pembridge, with dowers.8 The latter’s death, in 1410, not only enabled him to recover a substantial share of his patrimony, but also brought him the extensive possessions of Juliana’s brother, Sir Fulk Pembridge*, who had died childless shortly before. Thus, on his coming of age, Richard Vernon also became owner of the castle and lordship of Tong in Shropshire and the manor of Aylestone in Leicestershire. By July 1416 he was, in addition, seised of Little Appleby in the latter county, as well as land in Seckington, Warwickshire; and he duly settled the greater part of his inheritance upon a panel of trustees, which included Sir Thomas Maureward* and Hugh Erdeswyk*.

In August of 1338, Lord Berkeley married Elizabeth le Despenser, daughter of Hugh Despenser the younger and Eleanor de Clare. He married Elizabeth le Despenser, despite the fact that it had been his grandfather Roger Mortimer that was namely responsible for the execution of Elizabeth's father Hugh le Despenser in 1326.
