#TBT: Blue Ridge Parkway Cemeteries Receive TLC

throwback thursday to an article about John King and Milwaukee Nichols Wilson....

https://www.roanoke.com/life/parkway-cemeteries-receive-tlc/

My 2nd great aunt Milwaukee Wilhelmina Nichols was born in 1887 Franklin County, Virginia. She later married Jonas Larkin Wilson in 1905 and had 12 children. Two sets of twins among them died young. She passed away in 1950 and was probably buried on the family farm. Her grave now sits close to the Parkway and her four twins nearby. She was the daughter of Ezekiel Hankin and Harriet Isabel Williams Nichols.

Further down in the article is my 4th great grandfather John King. He was born about 1759 and fought in the revolution. He had about six children before he was laid to rest in Floyd County. Virginia. He was the father of Henry D. King who was an ancestor of my grandmother Mae Collins Nichols.

Another brick in the wall... Anthony King Sr.

MY 4th Great Grandfather Anthony King Sr. was born in New Jersey and married Dorces Pickle. His son Anthony Junior was the father of my 2nd Great Grandfather Mike King. It is unclear at this time who his parents were.

In the 1850 census he is living with his son and his family in Floyd, Virginia. There is no known records to connect him with any parents at this time, we call this lack of sources a wall in the family history blogosphere...

LOUISA CATHERINE ALDRIDGE #FamilyHistoryFriday

LOUISA CATHERINE OCTAVIA ALDRIDGE
LOUISA CATHERINE ALDRIDGE AKA OCTAVIA KING....

My great, great grandmother Louisa came from a broken home. Her mother Mary Gibson AKA Polly married Madison Martin Aldridge in Virginia in 1836. Sometime before 1846, Madison left Polly and moved west to West Virginia and then to Ohio with his second wife Mary Ann Chaffin. Louisa was born about 1850 in Virginia. Madison may have been her father but if so, he was living in Ohio at the time. When Louisa's brother Joseph Aldridge got married the name of his father on the marriage record was Green Aldridge. Green was probably the second husband of Polly Gibson and may have been the father of all of Polly's children.

Madison raised his new family in Ohio and went back to Virginia in the fifties to divorce Polly. Why so long? What happened to Polly after the separation? When did she re-marry? Its a mystery....

In the 1860 census, Louisa was living with the family of Robert Jackson King in Floyd. Robert was the son of Henry D. King and Sarah Ann Bartlett. Henry and Sarah were the parents of my great, great grandmother Nancy Rachel King, who married George Riley Bartlett. Robert was married to Margaret Jane King, who was the daughter of Anthony King and Peggy Wright. Anthony and Peggy were the parents of my great, great grandfather Michael O. King who married Louisa in 1866....

I have yet to find a record of Green Aldridge or Polly Gibson in the census records BUT its possible that they may be the actual parents of Louisa and her siblings.

Private John King, Revolutionary Soldier #52ancestors

John King, the Revolutionary soldier, volunteered for service to his country, in the cause of freedom, at White Plains, Maryland, for the term of three years 1778-1781. He served as a private under the command of Captain Stull of the Regiment commanded by Colonel Gunby, in the Maryland line from April 1778-April 1781. He fought in the Battles of Ruddy Fork, Alamance and Guilfod in the state of North Carolina. Was discharged from duty in Canaden, South Carolina, April 1781, When he arrived in Virginia is uncertain.
The above military record is contrary to a record that has previously been published. However, the above record is the one recieved from the Military Archives, Washington, DC., The above record was approved by the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution who have access to Military Archives records.
In 1818 the Revolutionary Claims Act was enacted by U.S. Congress providing a pension to Revolutionary soldiers. John King did not agree to apply for pension at this time. He felt he would be asking for and recieving charity of which he was opposed. He fought for freedom and independence not for monetary gain.
By 1829 John King was experiencing some mifortune and realized he would come to the point of declining health. He appeared before the court in Montgomery County, Virginia, in September, 1829, with his sworn statement of service, record of property ownership and letters of recommendation from his neighbors, Andrew Lewis, Jonathon Conner, and son-in-law, Stephen Burnett. Andrew Lewis stated he knew personally that Jong King had fought bravely in the battles he mentioned. He was in his neighbor, a man of good character, truthful and honest. However he had experienced financial difficulty.
In June, 1832, John King signed the following statement:
Known all men by these present, that I, John King, of the County of Floyd, Revolutionary Pensioner of the United States, do hereby constitutes and appoint Robert Craig, my true and lawful attorney for me and in my name, to receive from the Agent of the United States for paying pensions in Washington City, DC, my pensions from fourth day of March, 1831., to the fourth of March 1832.
Witness my Hand and Seal, this the 18'th day of June, 1832.

"Seaman" John King of Weymouth came from England and settled in the part of Weymouth, Mass. known as King's Cove. His son, Phillip, was a Captain and an ancestor of George King who fought in the American Revolution....

"On 23 June, 1657, John King of Weymouth deposed before Thomas Danforth in Middlesex County Court in the case of Joshua Tead versus Richard Collicut. He stated that he was "about 57 years" of age and " that he was with Mr. Richard Colicut in Xenebeak River . . . " in May, 1656. (The Genealogical Advertiser, 1: 90-95.) This deposition gives his approximate age as born near 1600."
"John Humphrey came from Dorchester in the county of Dorset, which is six miles north from Weymouth, and it is likely that John and Mary King came from the same locality. Neither the marriage of John Humphrey nor that of John King is on record in the parish of Holy Trinity in Dorchester."
