Captain Joseph Martin of Colonial Virginia #52ancestors

Capt Joseph Martin, Sr. is my 6th great grandfather

Joseph Martin Sr., was the son of wealthy British merchant William Martin in Bristol, England,[2] who sent his son to Virginia as supercargo aboard his ship the Brice.[3] Martin Sr. wrote to his English father that he planned to marry the daughter of a common Virginia colonist. Even though she was from the Chiles family and was a descendant of Virginia's Col. John Page, to Martin's wealthy father back in England all American colonists were inferior to the English. William Martin of Bristol was himself Lord Mayor of Bristol[4] and owner of a ship building company, a glass manufacturing plant, importer and exporter with the new world; including tobacco. The father wrote back disinheriting young Joseph Martin Sr., who never returned to England.[5]
Joseph Martin Sr. was "a perfect Englishman", recalled his grandson later, "large and athletic; bold, daring, self-willed andsupercilious. And in him was depicted, as my father has told me, the most complete form of the aristocracy of the British government."[6] Capt. Martin arrived in Albemarle County in 1745, one of the original patentees.[7] Joseph Martin Sr. left some 300 acres of his landholdings to son Joseph Jr. at his death in 1762. Nearby neighbors Dr. Thomas WalkerPeter Jefferson,James Madison, and the Lewis and Clark clans and kin including Lewis, Carr, Waller, Dabney, Hammock, Hughes, etc.[8]

MARTIN FAMILY HISTORY :
History on the Martin's dates back to 316 AD where they preached Christianity to France. They departed and left for England in the first sea-worthy vessel that hauled horses as cargo for battle. There they participated in the battle of Hastings in 1066, and travelled with William the Conqueror. Early ancestors were from northern France and Martin de Tours was from Pembroke County, England and had a sister who married Calfulnius Presbyter Britannus. Their son was the famous St. Patrick of Ireland. In 1208 AD the son of William Martin, Sir William Martin, (great-grandson of Martin de Tours) married the Princess of South Wales. William Martin was born at Pembroke Castle in Wales. In the middle 1600’s William Martin lived at the Manor of Pindergast in England and entered the mercantile business in Bristol, the second largest city in Great Britain at the time. William Martin had his own fleet of ships in the seaport of Bristol England.
Joseph Martin was born in Bristol, England and was
the youngest son of William Martin. Joseph was trained by his father in the merchant shipping business and was part of a very prosperous business.
About 1724, when Joseph became of age for romance, he fell in love with a young lady the family did not favor. To avoid any problems, his father outfitted a sailing ship named "Brice" and put aboard his son Joseph as "Supercargo". (n.b. The name "Brice" later became a family name.)
... “The Brice” [was bound for] Virginia [with Joseph] in charge of a load of goods for a trading expedition. “The Brice” made several trips to Barbados, but was eventually stolen. Joseph collected compensation money for the ship and purchased estates in Charlottesville, VA.
When Joseph settled down in Colonial Virginia he fell in love with a local Plantation owners daughter by the name of Susanna Chiles and they were married soon after. When word of his marriage arrived in England, his father was so enraged that he would marry below his stature that disinherited his son and cut him from his will.
--------
Capt. Martin arrived in Albemarle County in 1745, one of the original patentees. He settled on a 2,200-acre land grant nearby neighbors Dr. Thomas Walker, Peter Jefferson, James Madison, and the Lewis and Clark clans—all connections that would be useful to his rambunctious son.
According to family records, Joseph and Susanna settled in Albemarle County, Virginia and had a total of nine children before Susanna passed away around 1750.
Joseph re-married on June 28, l754 to Ann Sandage. Ann was the widow since 1747 of William Sandage of Spottsylvania County. At the time Joseph was a
resident of Louisa County. Louisa County records reflect Joseph married to Ann from 1754 onward.
Family history reflects that after both Joseph and his father William had passed away the family members in England offered to share in the family estate. Joseph, the third son of Joseph booked passage on a sailing ship
to England to conclude the inheritance offering however missed the ship sail date and thus never made it to England. After this misfortune no further attempt was made to share in the Family fortune.
----------
Joseph Martin Sr. was "a perfect Englishman", recalled his grandson later, "large and athletic; bold, daring, self-willed and supercilious. And in him was depicted, as my father has told me, the most complete form of the aristocracy of the British government."
Joseph and Susannah Martin's son, Brig. Gen. Joseph Martin married Elizabeth "Betsy" Ward, daughter of Nancy Ward who was known as "Beloved Woman of the Cherokee".
1. Joseph MARTIN (son of William MARTIN) died Jan 1762 in Albemarle Co VA. He married Susannah CHILES ABT 1733 in VA. She was born 28 Apr 1701 in Albemarle Co VA, and died 24 Jun 1756 in Albemarle Co VA.
Children of Joseph MARTIN and Susannah CHILES are:

Pvt. Emera V. Altizer, American Revolutionary Soldier #52ancestors

UPDATE Emera Altizer is NOT my 6th great grandfather as was previously thought.
Turns out his daughter was the second wife of my ancestor George Reed, Sr.....

He was a German immigrant and was a Private in the American Revolution...
Emera Ambrose von Althausen was the son of Johann Peter Althauser and Elisabetha Christiana Laucks. He was born in 1736 in Bingen on the Rhine, Hesse, Germany and died in September, 1819 in Montgomery Co, Virginia. His first name may have been Emmerich at birth.
He is believed to be buried in the Althizer Family Cemetery, near Chestnut Ridge, Montgomery County, Virginia. The stone in the cemetery is for a "Pvt Emera V. Altizer," who died in 1819. The stone is more recent than 1819, which could result in an error in the name (the "V" could have been for von), but this is Emera's correct death and military service.
He married (1) Anna Maria Pitzer in 1765 in Allengheny Co, Virginia and had four children. It is believed that he married (2) Mary Miller of Maryland and had four more children. It should be noted that in a DAR application, this marriage has been called into question. There is extensive documentation of a Revolutionary War pension for a Mary Altizer, but her birth name or parentage is not found in the application. In the application, her husband is listed as "Emory" Altizer. The pension account was W. 4,720.
Emera served in the Virginia Infantry for eighteen months during the American Revolution, under Capt. Wallace. His DAR number is A002076. He was discharged from service after the surrender of Cornwallis. One family legend claims that he was brought to America to serve in a war but was too young and was adopted by a German immigrant family, later marrying their daughter Anna Maria. The dates don't quite fit this tale, charming as it is.
As with many European names in early American history, variations of spelling abound. His birth name was most likely Althausen or von Althausen. You will also find Althausen, Althauzer, Altizera (DAR records) , Althizer and Altizer, the last being the most commonly found variation in modern times. Another family tale has the name Altizer being a creation made from ALT of his name and IZER from his wife's name. More likely, it was an Americanized spelling based on the sound of the original German name.
Children of EMERA ALTIZER and MARY PITZER are:
  • ELIZABETH ALTIZER, d. Abt. 1858; m. GEORGE REED.
  • NANCY ALTIZER, b. Abt. 1790; d. Aft. 1860., married Adam. Akers.
  • JOHN ALTIZER, b. 1765; d. December 11, 1850; m. ELIZABETH ELKENS.
  • EMERY ALTIZER, b. 1769; d. 1872.
Children of EMERA ALTIZER and MARY MILLER are:
  • WILLIAM ALTIZER, d. Aft. 1820.
  • ELIAS ALTIZER, b. March 1776, Montgomery Co, Va; d. November 13, 1840, Posey Co, Indiana.
  • DAVID RILEY ALTIZER, b. 1784; d. September 26, 1854, TAZEWELL COUNTY, VIRGINIA.
  • JONAS ALTIZER, b. 1791; d. August 1861; m. (1) SALLY RATCLIFFE; m. (2) SARAH SIMP?.
