Captain Brice Edwards, son of Isham

A correction pops up now and then when you research your family tree. In the case of Brice Edwards who married Jane Rakes, turns out he is not the son of Ambrose and Olive Martin Edwards, but is most likely the son of Isham Edwards. This makes Isham my ancestor and Ambrose, a distant cousin. While both are apparently descended from a common ancestor, only Isham appears to be my ancestor maternal.
These things happen, and family history is never really done. You have to thoroughly research each case and keep an eye out for changes.

The Brice Edwards who was the son of Ambrose and Olive married Martha Barksdale, was born in Albemarle County, and was a Major in the militia. His son John Ambrose Barksdale Edwards was born in Albemarle County and married Elizabeth James.

The Brice who married Jane Rakes was a Captain and was born in Patrick County. His daughter Elizabeth married Peter Simon Hancock.

See the difference. Dont just copy others trees, do the homework.
Keep climbing.

Does your tree make sense?

Keep in mind that not every bit of information you find on your relative or ancestor is going to be true. Some people copy others without checking their facts and some people will copy you too. For this reason alone, due diligence is a must have in any tree. If you are not a thousand percent certain that a relationship is right say so.
If your fifth great grandfather was born in 1776 and his mother was born in 1770 you may have gotten some bad intel. And if his father died two years before he was born, he may not be the father, Luke.
If his father was born in another state and never moved or if he was in a different county his whole life, he may not be the father. And if he is not the father, was his wife really the mother. Circumstantial evidence is not admissible in court and should not be writ in stone on your tree either.
Just because five of your cousins on Ancestry listed Ben as the father of Luke or Luke as the father of Rey does not mean it is so. Do your detective work and confirm beyond a reasonable doubt that the tree is accurate or at least note any facts that are not confirmed. Keep in mind that others will not do the leg work and will copy you and your sixth great grandson may want to do the family tree for his grandchildren and may not be able to find the proof as easily as you can now.
Be the late night family detective your future generations need and leave no stones unturned. Think I have covered all the bases on this subject but let me finish with one more example.
Everyone on ancestry had assumed that my elder John Nichols was the son of Isaac and Rhoda Bond Nichols because they were in the same county he was born in, but it turned out with a lot of homework that Isaac and Rhoda had a son the same year that John was born and also, they did not have any sons named John at all.
Also DNA evidence proved that John and Isaac were two different bloodlines as they had different Y DNA haplogroups and so could not be related at all. John was actually a member of another line of Nichols who lived in Bedford County and was related to John Nichols who moved to Bedford from Maryland. He and John had the same Y DNA and so were related as sons inherit their Y DNA from their fathers so therefore Isaac was not related to John but John was.
Turns out that John's son, Arch had a son named John, of course his brother John did too, but not in the same time frame or location. But that is another story. While one researcher had taken an educated guess and gotten the bloodline wrong, others had copied their info and gotten their lines wrong too. And after having spent months and months researching Isaac's family, DNA proved that Isaac was NOT the father, as Maury would say.
On a side note, Isaac is actually related to me through a relatives marriage to my Hatcher line, so the research I ended up doing was not in vain at all, and I found some pretty cool relatives of Rhoda Bond in the process.
Rhoda had a relative who was scalped in a battle with Native Americans during Black Hawk's War, and was one of the bodies found the next day by Abraham Lincoln's unit. His name was James Bond, and I found him while researching Rhoda's tree. Just having a James Bond in the tree makes it worth the work.
Back to topic. Do your homework. Don't copy. And if you can use DNA to confirm where possible.
By the way, if you read my earlier posts about Isaac and Rhoda's families and them being ancestors, I was wrong about them. #update.
Keep climbing trees and breaking through walls. The fruit is worth the labor.
Peace.

Sir Walter Devereux, Lord Chancellor of Ireland #52ancestors

update
Sir Walter Devereux is my ancestor but not through the Bond family as I am not a descendant of Wright Bond. He is however related to me through my Linville line...
=========================================================

Sir Walter Devereux (1411 – 22 April 1459) of Bodenham and Weobley was a loyal supporter of the Richard of York, 3rd Duke of York during the Wars of the Roses. He was Lord Chancellor of Ireland from 1449 to about 1451.

Walter Devereux was born in 1411 in Bodenham, Herefordshire to a senior Walter Devereux (or Deverois, 1387–1420) and his wife Elizabeth Bromwich.[1] His maternal grandparents were Thomas Bromwich, Lord Justice of Ireland and Catherine Oldcastle.
His paternal grandparents were an elder Walter Devereux (c. 1361–1402) and Agnes Crophull.[a] Agnes was mother of Sir Thomas Parr by a second marriage to John Parr of Kendal; and paternal grandmother of William Parr, 1st Baron Parr of Kendal, a noted courtier under Edward IV of England and grandfather of Queen Catherine Parr. Agnes Crophull's third husband was John Merbury, the father of Walter Devereux's wife by a previous marriage as indicated below.
His arms were: Argent a fesse gules, in chief three torteaux.
He married Elizabeth Merbury. She was a daughter of Sir John Merbury,[2] Chief Justice of South Wales and his wife Alice Pembridge. They had the following children:
His first residence was Bodenham and the core of his Devereux family estates. With the death of his grandmother, Agnes Crophull, in 1436, he inherited the remainder of his Devereux lands including Lyonshall Castle.[4] She withheld her Crophull lands, though, and deeded a life interest in them to her third husband, John Merbury.[2] With his death in 1438, Walter Devereux inherited the Crophull lands[5] including Weobley,[c] and the Merbury estates.
Walter Devereux was a knight by 1429 when he first represented Hereford in Parliament.[6] He would represent Hereford again in 1434, 1436,[7] 1440,[8] 1450, and 1459. Devereux was appointed to collect the tenth and fifteenth in 1336 and 1440 granted to the king by Parliament,[9][10] and was entrusted again in 1441 with collection of a tenth and fifteenth to fund an expedition by the Duke of York to defend English possessions in France.[11] In 1446, he was also entrusted with collecting a loan to the king.[12] He was justice of peace for Hereford in 1441,.[13] He served as sheriff of Herefordshire in 1447,[6] and Gloucester in 1455.[14]
Walter Devereux[15] served with the Richard of York, 3rd Duke of York in France, and remained his supporter throughout the War of the Roses. In 1441 Devereux was granted protection and appointed an attorney while on service with York in France,[16] and within a year had been knighted. In 1442 and 1445 he was in garrison at Arques (Normandy), and was listed as a captain.[17] On 19 December 1445 he was leading a garrison detachment at the Siege of Conches.[18] After York made a declaration at Ludlow in February 1452 declaring his loyalty to the King, but wishing to free the Court from bad advisors. The King did not respond, and York took to the field calling in his supporters including Walter Devereux, and marched on London. The King marched out to meet them, and eventually found York entrenched at Dartford Heath. The confrontation was resolved peacefully, but skirmishing followed leading to Devereux being attainted for treason by Parliament in 1452. At this time Devereux began holding Wigmore Castle for the Yorkists.
On 22 May 1455 the first Battle of St. Albans was fought north of London traditionally marking the opening of the War of the Roses. A Yorkist victory that included the capture of the King, it restored the Duke of York to complete power. Shortly after the victory Parliament pardoned Walter Devereux.[15] As the King and the Lancaster party maneuvered to reverse their losses, outbursts of lawlessness grew on the Welsh Marches. Walter Devereux, Constable of Wigmore Castle, was up in arms. In the summer of 1456, he descended on Hereford with the castle’s garrison and captured the mayor and justices. Devereux then brought before the justices several local men whom the justices were obliged to condemn to death, and then he had them hanged. Devereux followed this by mustering a force of 2000 archers from Gwent, and marched on the castles at Carmarthen and Aberystwyth, which he took by assault. Afterwards he declared a commission of ‘oyer and terminer’ to judge and condemn more people whom he believed hostile to York. Among his prisoners were Edmund Tudor, the king’s half-brother, and Robert Rees, Keeper of the Welsh Seal.
Devereux was granted land in Drogheda in Ireland in 1459.[1]

He was appointed Lord Chancellor of Ireland in 1449. His term was brief and likely uneventful. In 1451, Richard Plantagenet, 3rd Duke of York, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland appointed his son, the 8-year-old Edmund, Earl of Rutland, as the new Lord Chancellor. Since Rutland was under age, his duties were taken over by Deputy Chancellor Edmund Oldhall.

Walter Devereux died on the 22nd or 23 April in 1459.[1]

Pvt. Emera V. Altizer, American Revolutionary Soldier #52ancestors

UPDATE Emera Altizer is NOT my 6th great grandfather as was previously thought.
Turns out his daughter was the second wife of my ancestor George Reed, Sr.....

He was a German immigrant and was a Private in the American Revolution...
Emera Ambrose von Althausen was the son of Johann Peter Althauser and Elisabetha Christiana Laucks. He was born in 1736 in Bingen on the Rhine, Hesse, Germany and died in September, 1819 in Montgomery Co, Virginia. His first name may have been Emmerich at birth.
He is believed to be buried in the Althizer Family Cemetery, near Chestnut Ridge, Montgomery County, Virginia. The stone in the cemetery is for a "Pvt Emera V. Altizer," who died in 1819. The stone is more recent than 1819, which could result in an error in the name (the "V" could have been for von), but this is Emera's correct death and military service.
He married (1) Anna Maria Pitzer in 1765 in Allengheny Co, Virginia and had four children. It is believed that he married (2) Mary Miller of Maryland and had four more children. It should be noted that in a DAR application, this marriage has been called into question. There is extensive documentation of a Revolutionary War pension for a Mary Altizer, but her birth name or parentage is not found in the application. In the application, her husband is listed as "Emory" Altizer. The pension account was W. 4,720.
Emera served in the Virginia Infantry for eighteen months during the American Revolution, under Capt. Wallace. His DAR number is A002076. He was discharged from service after the surrender of Cornwallis. One family legend claims that he was brought to America to serve in a war but was too young and was adopted by a German immigrant family, later marrying their daughter Anna Maria. The dates don't quite fit this tale, charming as it is.
As with many European names in early American history, variations of spelling abound. His birth name was most likely Althausen or von Althausen. You will also find Althausen, Althauzer, Altizera (DAR records) , Althizer and Altizer, the last being the most commonly found variation in modern times. Another family tale has the name Altizer being a creation made from ALT of his name and IZER from his wife's name. More likely, it was an Americanized spelling based on the sound of the original German name.
Children of EMERA ALTIZER and MARY PITZER are:
  • ELIZABETH ALTIZER, d. Abt. 1858; m. GEORGE REED.
  • NANCY ALTIZER, b. Abt. 1790; d. Aft. 1860., married Adam. Akers.
  • JOHN ALTIZER, b. 1765; d. December 11, 1850; m. ELIZABETH ELKENS.
  • EMERY ALTIZER, b. 1769; d. 1872.
Children of EMERA ALTIZER and MARY MILLER are:
  • WILLIAM ALTIZER, d. Aft. 1820.
  • ELIAS ALTIZER, b. March 1776, Montgomery Co, Va; d. November 13, 1840, Posey Co, Indiana.
  • DAVID RILEY ALTIZER, b. 1784; d. September 26, 1854, TAZEWELL COUNTY, VIRGINIA.
  • JONAS ALTIZER, b. 1791; d. August 1861; m. (1) SALLY RATCLIFFE; m. (2) SARAH SIMP?.

Sgt. Wright Bond: Minute Man and Revolutionary Soldier #52ancestors

UPDATE although i was previously led to believe that my NICHOLS bloodline was descended from Wright Bond, DNA proved that was wrong. Wright Bond is not an ancestor but one of his descendants did marry a descendant of my HATCHER bloodline and so he is still in the family tree...
=================================================

Sgt. Wright Bond was a Minute Man and Revolutionary Soldier. He was the son of Page Bond and Ann Holland. He married Martha Brown, daughter of James Brown and Mary Spearman.
He was a descendant of Major John Bond of Virginia, who married Dorothy Harris.

http://home.earthlink.net/~fbond/bond01/d1.htm
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ywhite/wilmic/d0/i0000402.htm

Wright2 Bond (Page1)(57) was born in Cumberland Co., VA. April 13, 1759. Wright died February 10, 1843 in Bedford Co., VA., at 83 years of age.
He married Martha "Patsy" Brown in Cumberland, Va, November 17, 1781.(58) Patsy was born about 1760. She was the daughter of James Brown and Mary Spearman. Patsy died after March 1848. Information taken from Bible records and with Pension Application. Patsy was 83 in 1843, and a widow. Dennis Johnson provided this info.
Wright was listed as the head of a family on the 1800 Census in Bedford Co.,VA..(59) According to Dennis Johnson: "It would appear that WRIGHT BOND was born 13 Apr 1759 in CUMBERLAND Co., VA. He married MARTHA "Pats/Patty" BROWN in Cumberland Co., VA. in Nov. 1781. (It states they married in Cumberland Co., VA. in the Pension file...ymw)
It is not clear where he was after November 1781 but we do know that he moved to Bedford, Va. in 1799-1800. Thus it would appear that all the children were born in CUMBERLAND CO., VA. up until Rhoda who could have been born in either location.

WRIGHT WAS A REVOLUTIONARY SOLDIER. HE ENLISTED IN CUMBERLAND COUNTY, VA. WHERE HE WAS BORN AND RAISED. HIS AMERICAN REVOLUTION PENSION # W3382.
"Dennis has a record of the letter sent to Miss Jane Smith in 1930 from the National Archives: "REV. AND 1812 WARS SECTION; MCS:MLB NOVEMBER 7, 1930
MISS JANE E. SMITH BEDFORD, VIRGINIA

DEAR MADAM:
YOU ARE ADVISED THAT IT APPEARS FROM THE PAPERS IN THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR PENSION CLAIM, W. 3382, THAT WRIGHT BOND WAS BORN APRIL 13, 1759 IN CUMBERLAND COUNTY, VIRGINIA.
WHILE A RESIDENT OF CUMBERLAND COUNTY, VIRGINIA, HE WAS ENGAGED IN 1775 TO SERVE FOR ONE YEAR AS A MINUTE MAN, AND DURING THAT PERIOD HE ENLISTED AND SERVED THREE TOURS IN CAPTAIN JOSPEH CARRINTON'S (Joseph Carrington - ymw)VIRGINIA COMPANY. A TOUR OF ABOUT ONE MONTH AS A PRIVATE, (a tour) ONE OF THREE AND A HALF MONTHS AS A PRIVATE AND WAS AT NORFOLK AT THE TIME LORD DUNMORE BURNED THAT TOWN, AND A TOUR OF FOUR MONTHS AS CORPORAL. HE ENLISTED IN SEPTEMBER, 1777 AND SERVED SIX WEEKS AS SERGEANT IN CAPTAIN BENJAMIN WILSON'S VIRGINIA COMPANY AND HE STATED THAT THIS SERVICE WAS AS SUBSTITUTE FOR HIS FATHER-IN-LAW, MOSES HUBBARD.

( It was first thought that he was married before Pasty Brown became his wife. But we (Linda Lawson ; David Bell ; Marcia Witt ; Janice Kay Markham ; Dennis Johnson & I) have since learned that "father-in-law" was a frequent term for "step-father" in Colonial times...This news supports the theory that Page & Ann Holland Bond were Wrights parents...David Bell says, "Sometime before 1768 - when Anne's father identified her as "daughter Anne Hubbard" in his LWT - Anne had married Moses Hubbard." ...Yvonne Anspach White)

HE ENLISTED IN 1777 AND SERVED FOUR MONTHS AS SERGEANT IN CAPTAIN ROBERT ANDERSON'S VIRGINIA COMPANY.
HE ENLISTED IN 1779 AND SERVED TWO MONTHS AS SERGEANT IN CAPTAIN ROBERT ANDERSON'S VIRGINIA COMPANY.
HE ENLISTED IN 1780 AND SERVED AS SERGEANT IN CAPTAIN ROBERT ANDERSON'S VIRGINIA COMPANY.
IN 1799 OR 1800 HE MOVED TO BEDFORD COUNTY, VIRGINIA
THE SOLDIER DIED FEBRUARY 10, 1843 IN BEDFORD COUNTY, VIRGINIA.
THE SOLDIER MARRIED IN NOVEMBER, 1781 IN CUMBERLAND COUNTY, VIRGINIA MARTHA OR PATSEY BROWN.
WRIGHT AND MARTHA BOND HAD THE FOLLOWING CHILDREN:
SALLEY BORN JANUARY 23, 1783 DIED JULY 5, 1798 (Then this typewritten form has the following hand written notes with no comment as to whom the author is. dj)
