or How to trace a family tree with Google....
OK, now that I have your attention, lets trace a line from my family tree with Google shall we?
At the start I only had a bit of information from my pops about who his parents and grandparents were and that is all I started with. Pops knew his father and mother were Rufus and Mamie and his grandparents names Jim and Tressie and from there I was pretty much Sherlock Holmesing it....
Google search...
Rufus Nichols Mamie Nichols..........
of course if you ran the search now you would get all the files that I wrote afterwards, but I didnt have those then so...
http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.northam.usa.states.virginia.counties.patrick/1834/mb.ashx?pnt=1
gives an obituary for my aunt Rubie Hancock who were Rufus and Mamie Collins Nichols daughter...
and then
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=kalql8n&id=I19427
brings me to one of my biggest and most valuable sources THE SCHAFFER CONNER FAMILY TREE on WorldConnect by Scott Schaffer. Scott had already done lots of the work for me on my family tree and his files were very accurate. I used much of the info I found there to later build my family tree at Geni and Wikitree and Ancestry too. This file is about my aunt Hazel Woods and gives me a lot of hers and pops ancestors to add to my pedigree...
one link leads to her father Rufus Samuel Nichols and then another leads to his father Jim and his mother Tressie and on Jim's profile I find his parents names as Ezekiel Nichols and Harriet Williams.
Ezekiel's page lists his wife and children but no parents so now its back to Google to search for Zeke's parents...
A Google search for
Ezekiel Nichols Harriet Williams
finds me at
http://records.ancestry.com/ezekiel_hawkins_nichols_records.ashx?pid=32588021
an Ancestry file which lists Zeke's parents as John Nichols and Martha Jones....
and a click on John's name brings me to
http://records.ancestry.com/john_nichols_records.ashx?pid=60153209
my great, great, great grandfather's source document which lists no parents for John...
another wall to break...
It takes a long long time to find any leads for the next generation but one day I find a name on Mundia which is an Ancestry site.
http://www.mundia.com/us/Person/10430157/-561632947
A search there finds a profile for John with parents Isaac H. Nichols and Rhoda Bond.
but no parents for Isaac, by this time my head is hurting from all the walls, but eventually I go back to Mundia and search again and find another tree with Isaac and Rhoda in it. This tree
http://www.mundia.com/ca/Person/11366210/711730500
lists Isaac's parents as Isaac Nichols and Mary Gibson....
and his grandparents as William Nichols and Sarah Spencer...
William's parents as Isaac Nichols and Margery Cox and his grandparents as Thomas Nichols and Mary Ludford....
Now lets review, using Google and Ancestry alone I found
Me>Pop>Rufus>James>Zeke>John>Isaac>Isaac>William>Isaac>Thomas...
That's eleven generations with just a few searches. Sure it took several days but it was worth it.
I found a lot of other documents along the way to support these but the list is too long to do here and not really logical to name....
There are no leads for Thomas Nichols lineage but maybe someday...
Happy Hunting!
