recently found three more sons of john nichols and martha jones. martha remarried in 1873 to a robert meeks and was in the 1880 census as martha meeks living with her three youngest sons. henry, robert lee and samuel sampson nichols in west virginia where she had married robert smith meeks. although they were living apart at the time and were listed separately in the census. not sure if henry nichols is the same as james h nichols or his brother. but there is definite evidence that samuel sampson nichols is the son of john and martha jones nichols. and the census shows that martha became a meeks in west virginia. these three younger sons apparently spelled their name as nickles or nickels in wv.
also this would place john's death date about or before 1873 most likely. still have no death certificate for him or martha. i believe samuel sampson nichols is named after his uncle sampson jones. thats obvious. and now i wonder if maybe grandpa rufus samuel may have been named after him. the nickles / nickels family line there continued on with the same spelling. also, this census shows that martha was still alive in 1880.

#TBT: Blue Ridge Parkway Cemeteries Receive TLC
throwback thursday to an article about John King and Milwaukee Nichols Wilson....
https://www.roanoke.com/life/parkway-cemeteries-receive-tlc/
My 2nd great aunt Milwaukee Wilhelmina Nichols was born in 1887 Franklin County, Virginia. She later married Jonas Larkin Wilson in 1905 and had 12 children. Two sets of twins among them died young. She passed away in 1950 and was probably buried on the family farm. Her grave now sits close to the Parkway and her four twins nearby. She was the daughter of Ezekiel Hankin and Harriet Isabel Williams Nichols.
Further down in the article is my 4th great grandfather John King. He was born about 1759 and fought in the revolution. He had about six children before he was laid to rest in Floyd County. Virginia. He was the father of Henry D. King who was an ancestor of my grandmother Mae Collins Nichols.

#tbt: Rufus S Nichols
My grandpa Rufus Samuel Nichols was born in 1893 in Franklin County, Virginia. He was a farmer and he registered for the draft for World War One and World War Two. He passed away in 1953 in a Roanoke Hospital.
He had nine children and ten siblings. He was the son of James Ira Nichols and Teresa Marcella King.
He is a descendant of John Washington of Jamestown and is listed in the book
The Washingtons. Volume 9: The Presidential Branch: Six Wright Lines (The Washingtons: A Family History) by Justin Glenn.

Simon Nicholls, Planter and Town Crier
Earl Nichols, my Kentucky cousin is one of my DNA matches on FTDNA.
He traces his lineage back to Simon Nicholls of Maryland too.
Another DNA match connects to the MacNicol Clan on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. Meaning we are all probably Highlander adjacent.
Simon Nicholls was probably born in England, or maybe Scotland, and is believed to be the son of Simon. He was an immigrant and came to America before the Revolution and settled in Maryland where he was the town crier. Records say he was arrested once in Maryland for being drunk in public and was put in the stockades.
Simon or Symon was born about 1642 and reportedly lived to be 106 years old. He died in 1749 in Prince George's County in Maryland.
Simon married Jane or Anne Edmonston (another Scottish family) and had about six children. They married in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, where their son Thomas was born. The other five children were born in Prince George's County.

John Tilley, Mayflower Passenger
Good Morrow, cousin....
Recently I found four ancestors on the Mayflower... The Tilleys and The Howlands...
John Tilley and his wife Joan Hurst and their daughter Elizabeth Tilley and her husband John Howland.... my pilgrim ancestors.
John Howland was a servant of John Carver and he almost didnt make it to the new world. He almost was lost at sea when he apparently fell off the boat, but they pulled him back in and here I am today.
If you stop and think how many times you may have never been born it can be staggering. How many ancestors died sometime after continuing your line? What if they had died before then? If just one of my ancestors had a really bad day centuries ago, I would not be here to write this post for you or to find all these interesting characters in the story of my tree....
As a certain cute blonde once said, "The mind boggles"...
We should take some time every now and then to thank the fates for our lives i suppose. if you believe in fate.
Any way, John Tilley is my 12th great grandfather and his wife Joan is my 12th great grandmother...
Found this out when i went to www.RelativeFinder.org. Where apparently someone had found the link before me, but its pretty cool to find an ancestor on the ship, whereas before i could only find cousins at best...
Maybe there are more surprises on board in this journey; i still have some walls to break through.
Best of luck to you cousin on your journey. Keep climbing the tree and seeking dead people.
Family History can be fun....
Good bye to you... Fare thee well....
