Number one on the ancestor list is always yourself and so... #ancestorlist #52ancestors #week1.
Hi, my name is Raymond Nichols. I was born in Martinsville, Henry County, Virginia in 1966. The family moved to NC when I was about 3. My parents and many of my aunts and uncles worked in furniture factories here for many years.
I attended school in Welcome, NC. That is in Davidson County. I went to Welcome Elementary for 6 years. There was no Kindergarten classes when I started school so my first year was first grade.
I went to North Davidson Junior High for 3 years. Grades 7 through 9. The school is called North Davidson Middle School now for some reason.
I went to North Davidson Senior High for 3 years and graduated Class of 84. Some of the classes I took in school were Industrial Cooperative Training, Accounting, Typing (was planning to be a writer), French and Chorus (sometimes known as Glee Club)
During the summer before my senior year, I registered with the Army National Guard in Lexington, NC. Wanted to be a chopper pilot as I recall. Took the ASVAB twice because they said I scored too high and they wanted me to take it over. After spending a long night in a Charlotte motel waiting to go for the physical the next day, my recruiter came to get me because they wanted me to take the test again. Apparently I scored too high on the test because I did not get enough questions answered in the time allowed. Though I got most of them right there were not enough answers to suit the army and they wanted me to take the test again. This time I was to just mark the longest answer and not bother reading the questions. I could not do that and so the result was the same. They wanted me to take the test a third time, but by then, I had a job in the cotton mill and was tired of fooling with the test and so I declined.
After summer school, I got my diploma and decided to take a little time off and relax for a while. I was working in the Cotton Mill night shift and wanted to wait before going to college. This idea lasted about a week maybe and I found myself in the DCCC registering for classes. I signed up for an Accounting major and took some Accounting classes for about a half year whilst working nights. Needless to say that was not easy. I really did not like Accounting and did not know what I wanted to do in school. So I stopped those classes.
I worked in Dacotah Mills for about seven years until the plant closed in 1990. The textile industry went overseas and left many people jobless. As would the furniture industry years later.
I married in 88 and had 4 wonderful children, but the marriage did not last. My ex filed for divorce in 2005 after separating in 99.
I am a poet and was published in THE AMERICAN POETRY ANTHOLOGY, BEST NEW POETS OF 1986, HEARTS ON FIRE( A TREASURY OF POEMS ON LOVE), and THE COLORS OF LIFE.
That was in the late 80s.
I am now a single parent and grandfather of a handsome baby boy. I have an art gallery at Deviant Art and a Tee shirt shop at Zazzle, but they don't make any money so I work part time to pay the bills.
