"Martha Payne, daughter of Flayle Payne, married John Nichols of Frederick County, MD, probably in the 1750s. In 1757 or 1758 Sgt. John Nichols was credited for six days service in Capt. Moses Champlaine's Company during the French and Indian Wars. In March 1776 Lt. John Nichols was among the men who subscribed to and enrolled in Capt. Henry Boteler's Company of Frederick County Militia.Other enrollees were Sgts. Archibald and William Nicholls (sic), Flail Payne (sic), Barton Philpott, and John and Barton Garrett were among the men who took the Oath of Fidelity and Support in Frederick County."
